Hamas Won Power In West Bank Vote
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A51690-2005Jan5.html

> Many Palestinian and Israeli political analysts said that the group's goals were more nuanced and that its leaders recognized it eventually would have to evolve into a more moderate and mainstream political organization to survive and grow. One of the first steps, they said, was the participation of Hamas in local elections, giving it a grass-roots base for parliamentary elections this year. Eventually, they said, Hamas would contest the presidency and aim to become an internationally accepted political party.

"We will participate in local elections and parliamentary elections, and we will find power there in those two groups," said Hamad, the Hamas editor. "The local elections prove we can succeed. . . . It was an important step that can lead us to establishing a democratic process." >

1. excellent
Sounds great! Of course, Palestinians have the right to defend themselves and should continue protesting and/or fighting against Israeli troops unless Sharon decides to negotiate.

In my opinion, however, the Hamas should focus on equality and citizenship for everyone in Yesha, including the illegal settlers and IDF troops who live there.

2. As a US Citiznen i cannot support Hamas
Or i would be carted off to Guantanimo. I agree they should stop attacks against civilians inside 1947 partition line.

3. Both sides should be discouraged from attacking civlians
I see no reason why one should not encourage the Hamas to kill Israeli soldiers while protecting civilians on both sides and I find that one should support activities of self-defense which do not violate international law while condemning activities performed by both sides which harm civilians.

Of course, one should always point out that it is wise for the Hamas to work with Israelis once they are willing to end the occupation. If Israelis can demonstrate that they'll accept a divided holy land, then both sides should not practice violence beyond the political border under any circumstances.

5. Excellent?

Hamas kills innocent civilians. Women and children. That is not defending themselves. That is not protesting. That is terrorism. It's cold-blooded murder.

6. In other words, Hamas wants to follow in Hezbollah's footsteps.
Now, somebody explain to me why that would be such a great thing? Esp. if Hamas doesn't revise its definition of "occupied territory" to not include Tel Aviv?
