Sharon to resume contacts with Abbas
Cabinet decides to resume contact with Palestinian Authority
By Amos Harel and Aluf Benn, Haaretz Correspondents, and Haaretz Service

The political-security cabinet decided unanimously Wednesday evening to renew contacts with the Palestinian Authority.
The prime minister's office issued a statement clarifying that no diplomatic contacts will take place, but security cooperation will resume.

Israeli and Palestinian security officials are scheduled to hold a coordination meeting either Wednesday or Thursday night.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon froze all contacts with the PA last week after a Palestinian attack on the Karni Crossing between Israel and the northern Gaza Strip killed six Israeli civilians.

Sharon looks like he was shrewd to apply the early pressure on Abbas. As I type this, security coordination talks between Israeli and Palestinian representatives are underway at the Erez crossing point. Once again, the knee jerk reactions on both sides in this forum who were ready to accuse the other side of being out to sabotage the peace process are being proven wrong by the actual facts on the ground.

There is an exciting window of opportunity open right now to make real progress in ending this war. The people in the region are realizing this even if the DU community is not.
