Egypt Court Dismisses Warcrimes Case Against Sharon
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=574&ncid=721&e=3&u=/nm/20050129/wl_nm/mideast_egypt_sharon_dc

<snip>

"An Egyptian court on Saturday dismissed a case demanding compensation from Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon over accusations Israeli forces tortured and killed Egyptian prisoners of war during the Middle East war of 1967.

The court in the Sinai town of El Arish, close to the Israeli border, said the evidence submitted by the relatives of Egyptian soldiers was not strong enough to make a case."

<snip>

"Charges of Israeli war crimes surfaced in the mid-1990s when a retired Israeli army officer said 49 Egyptian prisoners were killed during the 1956 Israeli invasion across the Sinai desert.
An Israeli military historian said his research showed Israeli troops killed 300 Egyptian prisoners in the 1967 Middle East war. An Israeli inquiry later concluded that both sides killed prisoners during the 1956 war.

Lawyers for the relatives said they would appeal the court's ruling and press the Egyptian foreign and defense ministries to give them official documents."

The Egyptian govt. is as spineless as the dems who voted for Rice. The most corrupt govt. with respect to taking it in the ass from the U.S.

Edit: Besides...What the fuck woud have come of him being found guilty anyway? Surely no one thinks he would ever be brought to justice for any war crimes.

I don't know enough about this particular incident but know enough about the vile murdering thug that is Sharon to know it's likely to be true

do you honestly beleiev that he isn't responsible for the deaths at Sabra and Chatilla?? really

I guess you don't hold Bush accountable for anything that's happened in Iraq/Afghanistan or Gitmo then?

The Israeli Commission of Inquiry found he was unfit for public office and morally responsible for the massacres.

While the actual physical perpetrators were Phalangists - who supported them? who flew overhead lighting the camps up? who had completely surrounded the camp and set up checkpoints, who shot at those who managed to flee?

The Israeli army was the occupying force at the time and as such had the resposnibility - just imagine a modern scenario:

somewhere in Iraq some US trained Iraqi forces, are sent by the US to an area and provided with covering fire. The Iraqis slaughter a few thousand people, throwing in a bit of torture and rape for fun, do you think that maybe intelligent people would understand that the US was responsible? it's the downside to all the fun and excitement of occupying another nation.

if you really beleive that the Phalangists would do something like that without the knowledge and approval of their backers then you just havn't been paying attention.

Whatever he did or didn't do in Egypt Ariel Sharon is a war criminal and I for one will dance the happy dance when his heart finally stops supporting his blubbery frame and gives up altogether - then him and Arafat can compare notes about how many people you need to kill to get your own way

the IDF were PRESENT, they set up checkpoints that TOTALLY surrounded the camps, they SHOT AT those fleeing. ALL of these actions were undertaken by IDF members so they absolutely WERE under Israeli command.

Second point, occupying forces actually have responsibility for the civilians in the occupied nation and over the irregular forces they fight with.

Third, if you think for a second Phalangists would have done this without the prior knowledge of the IDF you are insanely deluded.

If a similar sitch happened in Iraq:

* US trained Iraqi soldiers ordered by US forces to "look for terrorists" in a certain place

* US sets up US staffed checkpoints surrounding said area

* US flies overhead and provides lighting

* Iraqi forces slaughter men women and children, stopping to rape while they're at it, THOUSANDS of them

How many people do YOU think would beleive the US had no idea, it'd maybe wash in freepland but that's about it??
