PM aide: We will deal with illegal outposts after disengagement
Israel will deal with the evacuation of illegal settlement outposts after the implementation of the disengagement plan, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's senior aide, Dov Weissglas, said Thursday.

Given the public mood in Israel, Weissglas said in a speech at Tel Aviv University, "Any attempt to evacuate illegal outposts could well present a very difficult test for us and the security forces."

He stressed that the United States would accept Israel's stance on the outposts, and said there was no misunderstanding between Washington and Jerusalem on the issue.

So much for "disengagement". If "outposts" (colonies) remain, so does the IDF and so does the occupation. Disengagement is now revealed as little more than a PR ploy.

Sharon Pledges to Remove Settler Outposts

Mon July 21, 2003 04:19 PM ET

By Gwen Ackerman
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon pledged Monday to remove "illegal" settler outposts in the West Bank to meet a demand made in a U.S.-backed peace plan that also calls for a freeze on all settlement activity.

Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas are due to discuss the so-called road map in separate meetings with U.S. President George Bush in Washington next week.

In a statement to the Israeli parliament, which met during summer recess to discuss pressing issues, Sharon acknowledged intense international pressure to dismantle the sparsely inhabited hilltop outposts.

3. I believe you are mistaken. He's talking about the West
Bank. There's a corresponding article in the Jerusalem Post in which he specifically mentions this:

Weisglass: Outposts to be cleared next
By JPOST.COM STAFF

Senior advisor to the prime minister Dov Weisglass said Thursday that after the disengagement from the Gaza Strip and northern West Bank was complete, Israel would begin the evacuation of illegal outposts in the West Bank.

In the present volatile climate, with explosive fumes wafting in the air, attempts to clear illegal outposts could lead Israel into a "difficult situation," Weisglass said at a conference on security at Tel Aviv University Thursday.

There is a limit to the traumas that one government, one army and one police force can undertake at the same time, Weisglass said.

However, as soon as the withdrawal is completed in the fall, the government will move on to tackle the problem of illegal outposts.

"We promised the US government to get rid of the illegal outposts," Weisglass said, "and we stand behind our obligations."

"We were hoping to rely on the Council of Settlements in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip (Yesha) in this matter, but the council is not helping us and so we must make do ourselves," Weisglass commented.

newyorican.....
seems your over enthusisasim to find all that is "evil" within us..got the best of you. The article is about the west bank and not about Gaza. Gaza as far as I know doesnt have any illegal outposts.

so i can see that you still dont believe were leaving gaza....just an interesting observation:

I guess that when we do leave Gaza and the kassams and mortors fly in to Sederot or Ashkelon...you'll still find in that some kind of Sharon conspiracy?...or that we're somehow doing it to ourselves, causing the hamasnikim to do it?......
