Why Israel? I can think of no greater mystery in all of American politics that the reasons behind the blind support the US gives to Israel. There is an old joke about why Israel will never become the 51st state of the United States…it is because that would mean that they only have 2 Senators! More... http://tvnewslies.org/blog/?p=10

5. Is it more offensive... |
|
Is the statement more offensive than the suffering imposed on the Palestinians? Follow the link at the end of the article to the special done by a prominent Israeli journalist about the occupation.
I think the whole situation is offensive and I don't like my tax dollars going toward state sponsored murder.

Because it buys into the "Jews run the world" meme. This is why anti-Semitic attitudes are tolerated on the left. The policies of Israel toward the Occupied Territories are unacceptable and should be challenged. But, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, Jews do not run the world or the US!

7. Don't confuse Jews with the Israeli government |
|
This has nothing to do with religion. It is not about anti anything. It is about a nation called Israel and their vile government.
You want to stop anti-Semitism? Stop associating it with the Israeli government. Simple.
The sad fact however is that Jewish groups and lobby groups do indeed have a huge amount of power over our government. They put money into campaigns of people who run against anyone who dares question Israel's actions or who dares to play fare with the Palestinians.
Please...don't bring anti-Semitism in to this discussion. It is an unfair distraction and it is a false accusation.
Thank you.

Often discussions of Israeli policy and her leaders have nothing to do with Judaism. But, there has been a trend to hide anti-Semitic remarks in some discussions.
"The sad fact however is that Jewish groups and lobby groups do indeed have a huge amount of power over our government. They put money into campaigns of people who run against anyone who dares question Israel's actions or who dares to play fare with the Palestinians." This VERY statement backs up what I am saying! You are telling my to stop anti-Semitism by not equating it with Israel, then you turn around and say Jews have lots of money and power over the US government and use said money to go after those who don't support Israel! YOU just tied Jews to Israel!
The REAL fact is that 70% of Jews are Democrats! The REAL fact is that MOST Jews support progressive agendas, INCLUDING disengagement with the Occupied Territories. MOST Jews want Israel to SURVIVE!
Read more in the I/P room. There are PLENTY of threads that discuss the errors of Israeli policies and her politicians that don't EVEN come close to being anti-Semitic! But, to imply that Jews run this country, through money or power is ANTI-SEMITIC!
From the RULES for THIS FORUM:
Who is Welcome In the I/P Forum, who is not:
We welcome progressives of all stripes and specifically note the I/P forum has many progressives whose affinity lie on opposite ends of the I/P debate. Do not assume that because someone is Pro-Israeli or Pro-Palestinian they are not progressive. A good rule of thumb for those who will do well are those who are actively seeking a peaceful and respectful settlement and are genuinely interested in a rational discourse of events in the I/P conflict. If you feel great affinity to groups who are promoting hate in the Middle East such as Kahane, or Hamas; feel there is a Jewish conspiracy governing US foreign policy or control of the media; or believe supporters of Islam or Palestinian Nationalism are terrorists, then you are probably likely to be banned.
Do you see it now?! Saying that AIPAC is running the show is just a clever way to get around saying JEWS run the government. They have power, like any lobbyist group, but nowhere near the power of the Tobacco or Oil lobbies!
It is VERY possible and EASY to criticize the Israeli government and politicians without being anti-Semitic, I should know, I do it all the time...as do others in this forum, who fall squarely on the Palestinian side!

9. I think you mean the Texas Oil and Saudi Oil Lobby, APIPAC |
|
Yes - APIPAC - American PETROLEUM Institute PAC.
As a "chemical engineer" my experience - in addition to your employer's PAC, people in the "industry" are expected to "voluntarily" contribute to APIPAC.
That's "APIPAC" -- not "AIPAC"
And in yesterday's New York Times - about APIPAC - not APAC
, New York Times, June 9, 2005
President Bush moved quickly after the 2000 election to fill many of the important environmental and energy jobs with corporate lobbyists who had spent their careers trying to weaken the laws they would then swear to protect. Most were vetted by Karl Rove and Dick Cheney. The result has been an erosion of the regulatory framework protecting the country's air, water, public lands and wildlife, combined with a chronic unwillingness by the administration to address difficult environmental issues.
Anyone needing evidence of industry's influence need look no further than Andrew C. Revkin's article in Wednesday's Times involving the handiwork of one Philip Cooney, an important but heretofore obscure official who serves as chief of staff of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
Mr. Cooney spent his immediate pre-White House years as a lawyer at the American Petroleum Institute, where he helped organize the oil industry's fight against limits on greenhouse gas emissions from factories and automobiles. Mr. Revkin reported that Mr. Cooney had been fighting the same fight in his new job by sanitizing government reports in an effort to cast doubt on the link - a link accepted by mainstream scientists - between climate change and the emissions caused by burning fossil fuels.
Creating uncertainty about that connection, of course, reduces the chances that anything meaningful will be done to clamp down on those emissions and thus to discomfit Mr. Bush's corporate allies.
<snip><
APIPAC --- not AIPAC!!
And if you have the time to read how we got into that mess (which your busy schedule probably precludes)
Oil has been driving the Middle Eastern politics of the US, the UK, and the British since before WW1 (Engdahl, below)
1) F. William Engdahl, "A Century Of War : Anglo-American Oil Politics and the New World Order 2) Avi Shliam, "War and Peace in the Middle East: A Concise History" 3) Matthew Simmons, "Twilight in the Desert: The Coming Saudi Oil Shock and the World Economy" 3) John Keay, "Sowing the Wind: The Seeds of Conflict in the Middle East"
Keay and Engdahl "name the names" -- you might want to Google "Mark Sykes" and "Sykes-Picot Agreement"
"Sykes-Picot" was a callous ands cynical move by the Brits and the French to carve up the Ottoman Empire -- and to see that only weak, multi-ethnic, internally warring, mini-state populated the Eastern Littoral of the Mediterranean --- to protect the Iranian, Iraqi, Saudi, and Persian Gulf oil lands;
to protect the Suez Canal
to protect access to East Africa (remember, England had colonies there)
to protect access to India.
Who owns more souls then Satan -- watch the meter when you fuel up your car.

Please use discretion when referencing obviously biased or factually questionable material. Vanity websites are generally not as credible as the New York Times, the Washington Post or the UK Guardian and are likely to be locked. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself is the author readily identifiable and likely to be cited by the mainline world press or encountered in an alternate format (mass-published book, academic journal, newspaper article, radio or TV show).
