Five evacuation nightmares

1. The spectacle of the Palestinians "dancing on the rooftops" in Gush Katif is one of the Israeli government's worst nightmares. Although most of the houses have slanted tile roofs, so it's hard to imagine anyone dancing on them, the government has made up its mind to tear them all down. This is not going to look very nice to the outside world, but not tearing them down would require another government vote, and that could end in the collapse of everything achieved until now.

2. Another nightmare scenario is disengagement under fire. The most likely candidate to make this happen is Hamas - not Islamic Jihad, which has only a few thousand members, most of whom are in the West Bank, and is therefore more manageable. Hamas is a militia that is still wavering between terror and the desire to become a political entity in the Palestinian Authority. It will want to improve its standing in the PA by helping to drive out the occupier (that's us), followed by eviction from the entire West Bank at some future date.

5. At the moment, the greatest nightmare of them all is Benjamin Netanyahu, whom no one can really pin down. Like the Scarlet Pimpernel, the legendary character from the days of the French Revolution, Bibi is here and there, both everywhere and nowhere. People are worried that he's preparing a putsch or cooking up some scheme to present to the Knesset to postpone the disengagement. Rumor has it that he's waiting for the night before the pullout to quit the government.
