Scrap 'Road Map' Peace Plan and Move On, Gingrich Says
By Julie Stahl
CNSNews.com Jerusalem Bureau Chief
June 24, 2005

Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) - It is time for Washington to abandon the "road map" peace plan intended to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and move on to a plan that will first allow Israel to win the war against terrorism, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich said.

But Israeli and Palestinian representatives voiced objections to Gingrich's plan.

The road map is the centerpiece of President Bush's Israeli-Palestinian Middle East policy. It was penned by members of the Quartet -- the U.S., the European Union, Russia and the United Nations -- and published two years ago based on a policy address given by Bush in June 2002.

The plan calls for an end to violence, with an eventual comprehensive settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by the end of this year, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

1. Gingrich's comments won't be worth much on the ground...
...as long as "Israel winning the war on terrorism" is a euphemism for maintaining apartheid and the brutal oppression of Palestinians. Israel has created the conditions that foster the Palestinian struggle, and seems to have little interest in seeking a just peace.

2. These assholes JUST DON'T GET IT.
The "road map" peace plan WAS NEVER intended to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, only to PLAY FOR TIME.

The only way to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is to GET THE USA OUT OF IT.

Only then will the Israelis sit down and bargain in good faith, and only then will the Palestinians have any faith in what Israel agrees to.

The current "road map" peace plan calls for the Palestinians to give up all their weapons FIRST, then negotiate some kind of land reform settlement once the USA and ISRAEL have decided that an Israeli settlement freeze can be enforced / defended...whenever Israeli RW harldiners has stolen enough land...

3. That is rich!
The same idiot who came up with the failed "Contract with America" really doesn't have room to talk about what good negotiations are. Perhaps if Abbas could get his shit together and make a damn decision without flip-flopping so much, maybe things would progress faster. Israel needs to be a little more flexible, but they also need to demand decisions from the PA leadership.
