Ezra: We will catch those behind attempted lynching in Gaza
Israel Police will catch those behind the attempted lynching of a Palestinian youth in the Gaza Strip, Public Security Minister Gideon Ezra told Israel Radio on Thursday.

Ezra was speaking a day after a 16-year-old Palestinian was hospitalized in critical condition after being pelted by large stones thrown by right-wing extremists in Gaza.

Meretz-Yahad MK Yossi Sarid called on the security establishment to look for those behind the attack with the same intensity that went into the hunt for the Palestinians who lynched two IDF soldiers at a police station in Ramallah in October 2000.

National Union MK Shaul Yahalom described the attack as "un-Jewish and immoral," the radio said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Wednesday night that the government must take "every measure" necessary to end acts of violence and road blocking by "rampaging" right-wing extremists.

"The battle now is not over the disengagement plan, but over the image and future of Israel, and under no circumstances can we allow a lawless gang to try to take control of life in Israel," he said. "The country's citizens must understand this danger, and every measure must be taken to end this rampaging."

1.  Stoning attack sickens Israelis
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,15785343%255E2703,00.html

<snip>

"ISRAEL has reacted with disgust to television images of right-wing extremists attempting to stone to death a Palestinian youth to protest the pending evacuation of Gaza Strip settlements."

<snip>

"Israelis were infuriated by television images of the attack on a prostrate Palestinian youth in Gaza by a group of stone-throwing Israeli youths wearing religious garb.

Seeking to provoke a clash with the Palestinians, extremists spray-painted "Mohammed is a pig" on the exterior wall of a building, sparking a rock-throwing exchange."

<snip>

"A small detachment of soldiers tried to keep the two sides apart, but an 18-year-old Palestinian was hit in the head by a rock and knocked unconscious.

A soldier knelt over the youth in an attempt to protect him from being hit by more rocks, but footage screened on Israeli television showed several Jewish youths running up and hurling rocks from point-blank range as others shouted "kill him."

Police probe lynch attempt at Tal Yam

<snip>

"Investigators from the central unit of the Southern District police were continuing to investigate the attempted lynch yesterday.

The IDF evacuated the Tal Yam outpost on Tuesday evening and arrested 46 of the right-wing activists who had taken over the site. Police assume that the would-be lynchers are among those in custody.

Investigators focused yesterday on deciphering photographic material documenting the event. Police also summoned several journalists to testify about the circumstances of the assault."

6. Along the same lines...
I saw a photo in an article from yesterday (I think it was in the Age) showing what was said to be private IDF contractors repairing the Palestinian home taken over by those settlers. That's not something I've seen or heard of happening before...

To me it showed the extreme contrast between the good that individual soldier did in trying to protect him, as well of the Israeli journalists who saved his life, and the cowardly reaction of the settler medic who refused to treat him, and the sickening words and actions of the attackers....

Violet...

7. welcome to the middle east.....
pretty fuckin confusing isnt it....the good, the bad and the ugly. Only the extremists fit the simplistic single dimensional description that people love to hate....the rest of us, be it civilians, reservists and even the regular soldiers are trying to get by without having our humanity destroyed, and so too with most of the palesteniains.

the good thing about this pullout is that the israeli extremists are now completly exposed, including the way they've brainwashed their kids...and at the sametime, as you guys have noted, its even been noticed that israeli soldiers have some good in them as well and are not monsters.....

I have to admit...i read the above posts a couple of times.....it was nice to read it.

4. From Haaretz;
'MKs slam police failure to arrest Jews who attacked Palestinian youth

Last update - 14:37 02/07/2005

Three days after the violent stoning attack on a Palestinian youth by right-wing Jewish extremists in the Muwassi area of the Gaza Strip, police on Saturday said they have failed to track down and arrest the perpetrators. Meretz Knesset members harshly criticized the lack of arrests in the incident.

Southern District central unit Commander Yoram Levy confirmed in an interview with Army Radio on Saturday that the three assailants suspected of stoning the Palestinian youth had successfully escaped police.

The identities of the suspects are known to police and officers are continuing to search for them.

Levy said one of the three suspects is above the age of 18 and the other two are 16 years old. The three live in West Bank settlements and one of them has a police record. '

8. Suspect in lynching attempt detained
The Southern District Police’s central unit detained an 18-year-old youngster suspected of involvement in the attempted lynching of a Palestinian youth in the illegal Tal Hayam settlement in Gaza last week.

Police sources said they hold video footage linking the youngster to the attack.

*This is a bulletin on www.ynetnews.com (thus no link). At the moment, a full article is not available in English (it'll probably be up in a few hours; I'll post it in the morning if no one beats me to it); according to the article on the Hebrew site, this is one of the three central suspects.

<snip>

"An 18-year-old resident of the West Bank was arrested Sunday on suspicion he was a "central figure" in last week's stoning attack on a Palestinian teenager in the Gaza Strip.

Police investigators say they have photographic proof of the suspect's involvement in the incident."

<snip>

"Photojournalists identified three teenagers that threw stones at Khaled al-Astel. One, a resident of the West Bank, was arrested by a police detective.

The suspect resisted arrest, and has refused to cooperate with the investigation."

"Police are also searching for two other suspects in connection with the lynch. They are currently waiting for more journalist photos from the Tel Yam outpost to help identify other participants."

10. Police arrest second suspect in attempted Gaza lynching
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/596279.html

<snip>

"Police on Tuesday arrested a second individual suspected of taking part in the attempted lynch of Hilal Majaida, 18, in the Gaza Strip's Muasi region last Wednesday.

Police officers are familiar with Avinoam Krispin, a 19-year-old resident of Kiryat Arba, due to previous violent transgressions. He was arrested near his house on Tuesday evening.

Krispin is suspected of moving to the Tal Yam outpost, established in an abandoned Palestinian home in the Muasi area by far-right extremists, and of involvement in rock fights with Palestinians.

According to analysis of media footage that documented the attack on Majaida, it appears that Krispin also threw rocks at the Palestinian youth, kicked him, and tried to pull him from the arms of IDF soldiers trying to protect him."
