so if we call you guys what you call yourselves, it's derogatory, but not when you call yourselves that. Brilliant, Subdivisions.

6. naw, that isn't necessarily stupid |

Words take part of their meaning from context, including how they're delivered. There's no doubt that "truthers" can be a derogatory term, to varying degrees. Sometimes the valence of words is actively contested -- "queer" comes to mind.
But I have little patience for the people who insist that the term is always derogatory, or for those who insist that they can use it but people like me never should. I don't keep notes on this sort of thing, so I'll assume that Subdivisions is in neither category.

7. Depends who uses it... |
|
From the debunking crowd, it's derogatory. If aimed at anyone who has not adopted it for themselves, or who has explicitly rejected it, it's childish & self-discrediting. Even more so if misspelled to make an explicit insult ("troofer"). It's analogous to how right-wingers use "Democrat" as an adjective.
However, the term also discredits anyone who uses it voluntarily as a positive description of one's self or allies. And very, very foolish. Such a person corners themselves into a sub-culture, a labeled identity, a brand, a team mentality.
