The USS Cole Incident was LIHOP!
http://www.timesherald.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=15445995&BRD=1672&PAG=461&dept_id=33380&rfi=6

"Senior Pentagon officials were warned not to let the USS Cole dock in Yemen two days before terrorists attacked the ship five years ago killing 17 sailors, according to Congressman Curt Weldon, who said the crucial intelligence was gleaned from the former secret defense operation, "Able Danger.""

Wow, now this is quite fascinating to me. Suggests to me the military was really gunning for some sort of confrontation, a la the original Pearl Harbor.

But when the USS Cole bombing didn't incite the drums of war, 9/11 was given the green light.

1. USS Cole was 10/12/2000, just before the elections.
I've sometimes wondered if the failure of the mission to rescue the Iran
hostages in 4/80 wasn't because the Pentagon figured they gained more by
tarring Carter with their failure than they would by succeeding.

How come in seven months after that they were not able to try again?
According to Wikipedia they came up with a scheme to put rocket-engines
on a C-130 so they could land and take off in a socker stadium. While
that might make an intriguing Plan B, letting a project like that become
the only egg in your basket makes no sense.

2. good point about the failed hostage rescue attempt
I never thought much about it before, but it could have easily been sabotaged for psyops purposes. It certainly made Carter look REAL bad.

I'm not really sure what the plan was for the USS Cole in terms of elections. But it sure seems as if the military was looking for trouble. Or did they want to make Clinton look bad?
