I feel ten feet tall tonight.
I just got back from election judge training. I am so thrilled and proud to be participating in our democracy this way. I wish I had know about this years ago. I guess the only thing I can say is... I didn't realize I was needed. Now I know.

It's a wonderful thing! :D

runs the polling place. Does setup, validates voters, keeps voting rolls, needs to know all the laws that pertain to the election, etc. it's gonna be cooooooool! :)

7. Do you have to be a judge
to do this, or a lawyer?

Thanks for performing this service. :yourock: I'm always amazed at how uncorrupt many of our elections really are, and I know there's got to be work I don't even know about to keep it that way.

10. Nope.
Just know the rules, follow the book, and have a phone handy to call the elections office (or lawyer) if necessary. Oh, and be willing to work a 12 hour + day on Nov. 2. :D

6. Aren't first-timers fun
How many are participating for the first time I wonder. Seems like alot. Me for instance. I will be GOTVing on Nov. 2. I've never even spent more than an hour in campaign headquarters before this year.

8. Get Ready For A Unique Election Day Experience
I sat as a poll watcher in 1972 when I was 16 and have spent election nights at election HQs, board of elections (tabulating numbers...one of the most boring places one can spend an election) and everwhere inbetween.

This is going to be a very special election and one I sense will be very gratifying...one we'll proudly say we fought the good fight and won.

Cheers!

9. Enjoy the election. Years ago I was an election runner.
Back when gathering the numbers was a lot slower I literally would run from polling place back to the courthouse with the tally, then back to another city polling place, then back to the courthouse. It was all very strategic because you had to plan your route carefully. The smaller ones you hit first because they had fewer to count. This was a small town and each side was always sure that someone was going to try and skew the numbers so the candidates had a backup to verify the numbers as they were read off the count sheets.

Also, spent many a long hour standing outside a polling place handing out voter cards for a candidate. It was legal as long as you were about 50 feet from the door. Never will forget the first election I worked (ripe old age of 10) and the "other" guy pulled up to one of the poorer precincts and handed out pints of Old Forrester as some of the people came out from voting. "It wasn't vote buying since they handed to them after they had voter." Those were certainly odd days.

Wish I could serve as an election official where I live but for some reason they never have a spot for me. I swear, there isn't one person under the age of 95 in my precinct - you would think one would get tired for one dern election and give a "youngster" a shot.

11. That Reminds Me Of My Grandma
She was a poll judge in Chicago for decades and she had a load of stories about how votes were "manufactured"...LOL!

My fave was the precinct she was in was soo Democratic, they had to pick straws and odd man/woman out had to play the Repugnican for the day. But then, when I moved out into my area 25 years ago, I swear I was the only Democrat voting and always got "the look" from the judges when my wife and I would come in and vote.

My funniest story is one year I went to vote and the elderly judge smiled...looked in the registration box...saw my mine, then my wife. She then looks up and me and says, well, will your sister be coming and voting later. I said "of course, and she's bringing the kids" <wink>. The lady turned shades of grey I'd never seen.

Cheers!
