Freeper cubemate came in talking about "school CD" looks scared
This is a new guy at work and I had to tell him politely that I didn't want to talk about the war with him. Dude's got a 10 year old daughter and has the fear working big time. THis is what they're going to run on, Iraqi based terrorists planning to get american schools. Bank on it.

1. If it helps, CNN reported this morning
that the CD was something used by school planners in Iraq. I'll try to find an article for you.

5. Great. AFTER * and Co. plant the idea in the heads of
mothers and fathers everywhere that their kids are in terrible danger of being 'terra rist' targets. And they will be stupid enough to believe it, even after it's proven wrong.

What's worse to me is the fact that kids heard this. And they WILL be scared. They don't know enough to understand that the pResident of the United States is using them to get votes. And here I didn't think he could go any lower. Scaring the crap out of kids.

God I hope there is justice in this world. And the Hague has a nice place ready for him and company.

13. Fear In Florida?
I spoke with a close friend in Broward County. Appears when this alert came out, the school authorities decided this was more than some Ridge/Asskroft scare tactic and actually called teachers together during the lunch hour to warn them that the school could be attacked before the election. Yes, this middle school would be attacked by "terrorists". Word got out to some of the kids and parents and tongues are wagging like crazy.

My friend called the school to find out details about this "threat" and was told to "watch the news"...and no threats like this has ever been reported, so they have to take things seriously. The lady even went to say that since 9/11 and the invasion on Iraq, we're in even greater danger (obviously not realizing who got us in this mess in the first place).

It's bad enough these people are still trying to get their lives together after two hurricanes tore apart large sections of the area, but to have these people have the double fear of a bogus terrorist warning is downright cruel.

17. Here you go: LINK
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/10/08/schools.iraq/index.html

Not only was the guy that owned the disc an Iraqi school planner, but all the info on the disc is available publicly on the Internet. So, no one came over here and scouted out schools, it was just downloaded to help him plan new schools in Iraq.

Fear, fear, fear.

"the intelligence community determined there was no threat." After the media has played up intel community as a bunch of 'space cowboys' who's gonna Blieve this?

"it could not be established that this person had any ties to terrorism." THAT is what parents will read & remember.

11. It's hard not to react to this crap--I had to slap MYSELF this AM
This morning while driving my daughter to school I turned on the radio/heard the school "warning" and immediately started feeling ill and panicky. I shook it off in the course of about 90 seconds but I have been researching Bush and his ilk for five years.

Point being/I KNOW BETTER and they even had me going for a minute (albeit briefly)

I am not excusing these uniformed sheep types that make asses of themselves buying what the bush admin shovels, but the terrorists getting our kids angle is a very effective one for Bush co.

I totally agree with you--they will exploit the hell out of the Russian school incident and will make this their new talking point.

The reality of course is...Bush has done NOTHING to protect us in the four years the SOB has been in office and I still maintain that 911 wouldn't have happened if he hadn't been at the helm!

16. They found the CD in July but waited until less than four weeks
until the election to go "public" (read that as try to scare the bejebbers out of every parent and student) that schools are targets? They had this info back when schools weren't in session? When, if anything needed to be done to bolster security, they could? Why on earth did they sit on it for three months? Could it be....political? (Gasp!) No, no...not political, it for the chi-i-i-i-i-ldren! Not as concerned for "child safety" as they are about renewing the scare factor - vote for me campaign.

BushCo is going to have to invent some new colors for the terra alert chart before Nov. 2nd, the system they have right now just doesn't go high enough. They might want to add "Hell is going to get you Red" or "Duck under you desk and put your arms over your head Orange to the 20th power".

I have been wanting to ask one simple question. When did America become such 'fraidy cats? Really. I know that 9/11 was a horrible shock but after Pearl Harbor our president told us the only thing we had to fear is fear itself. BoyGeorge & Co. keep telling us be afraid, be very afraid. I am the only one to keep you safe.

Safe, my ass! Hell, we are the United States of America - we have taken on threats and challenges from all corners of the world and have never, ever faced them fearfully. We are a nations of risk takers, dream makers, we are the ones whose forefathers dared to make arduous journeys to uncertain lands for a better life. Our very nature is to face challenges with a heads up and steel resolve - but never too afraid to hide. We took on fear and we never let it stop us.

That is just one more thing to hate Bush for - he has generated an entire party of citizens of our country that are as chickenshit as he is. And they are willing to kill innocent people in Iraq to feed their need to feel safe.

37. I agree the warning is bogus as hell/I think you guys are taking me wrong
I know it's bogus - YOU know it's bogus...all of DU most likely knows their threats are bogus...but let's face it probably 75% of the DU posters are not only political junkies, we are news junkies.

My only point is that the people that are uniformed (which is at least half of the people) just hear "Terra"
"Iraq" and "your children" and they freak out--it's a knee jerk reaction and it can be pretty effective.

I agree with you about people turning into wimps! We run more risk of being in a fatal car accident than having "terraists" get us.

Let's just hope the people of this country aren't as gullible as what the media would have us believe in regards to bush's bullshit!

27. CNN's Story
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/10/08/schools.iraq/index.html

"The Department of Homeland Security official said the material was associated with a person in Iraq, and it could not be established that this person had any ties to terrorism. He did have a connection to civic groups doing planning for schools in Iraq, the official said."

Notice the Fox story omits this tidbit.

Borne on ignorance. Ignorance and fear are cornerstones in the right-wing agenda. Without those, it falls, quickly and unceremoniously.

And as the redoubtable FDR so wisely said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

29. Please tell your friend this.
I live 20 miles from "Ground Zero," and the World Trade Center was actually visible from a promontory in my town until the 9/11 attacks brought the towers down. Every town in my area lost people in those attacks. Our children were sent home from school -- after the schools called to make sure parents weren't in NY, since so many people around here commute to Manhattan. My oldest child is in college in Manhattan. I AM NOT AFRAID. And neither is anyone else around here.

We know something COULD happen again. We also know that there isn't too much we as individuals can do to prevent it. What have we who live in an already targeted area done about the possibility of future attacks?

Speaking only for my own family, I can tell you that we have kept some extra money in the house, made sure to keep our cars always gassed up, given the kids cell phones, and discussed what the game plan is if something does happen, giving the son in NY some names of people with whom he can take refuge if he can't get home to us.

We don't have a bunker, gas masks, or nuke pills.

We feel we've done the practical thing, which is think about what to do after the fact. The rest is out of our hands, and having seen the response of New Yorkers to the attacks, we can only say to fearful people, "Toughen up and deal with it." If these frightened people could think back to the orderly way a city as densely populated as New York dealt with thousands of people ON FOOT trying to leave the city, the way those people maintained calm, and the way anyone could help showed up for duty, they might find the strength to resist their fears.

Please also point out WHO BENEFITS from a vague hint, coming out THREE WEEKS BEFORE THE ELECTION, that our kids will be hurt. Fear is the only thing Bush has left, and he's going to flog that dead horse right up to Kerry's inauguration (oh, yeah, I DO think they'll try to disrupt Kerry's term before it even starts, just as they did with Clinton).

Just my two cents, FWIW.

33. The most important point regarding Bush's Fear Campaign
that John Kerry should drive home in this debate was that despite all of the documented warnings our intelligence agencies were giving his administration of a growing terrorist threat during the summer of 2000 George Bush was--On Vacation for the entire month of August--after only being in office for less than 7 months. INCREDIBLE.

Then, even AFTER 911, he still took more vacation time than any other President in American History--by a long shot. MORE INCREDIBLE.

Kerry can pummel him and expose Shrub as “The Fraud” he is with this alone.

I pray he brings this up.

39. Please read this from an AP-sourced story:
Before your friend has a coronary over this:

<<"If there were an immediate threat, we would make that information known right away," Steele added.

Two U.S. officials in Washington, D.C. also told the AP there were serious questions about whether the military's find represented any threat; for instance, it could have come from someone innocently involved in civic planning, specifically school planning.

ABC News reported the information was discovered in July, but not much was thought of it until Muslim extremists took over a school in Russia at the cost of more than 300 lives last month.>>

Okay.. the most salient point being left out of Bush's political scare tactics, is the fact that there were SERIOUS questions about whether it represented any threat, or was innocent. This is being made public to further freak out the so-called "security moms" over the seige in Russia.

Here's the story:
