Debating parties or partying the debate

Editor's Note: Campus Vibe is a feature that provides student perspectives on the 2004 election from selected colleges across the United States. This week's contributor is Dwayne Robinson, student writer at The Alligator, the University of Florida independent student newspaper. GAINESVILLE, Florida (CNN) -- In the home of Gator football, University of Florida students took a traditionally serious affair -- a presidential debate -- and turned it into a sporting event.

UF College Republicans congregated at the Po' Boys Creole Café, where some members drank each time a candidate used the words "Iraq" or "terrorism."

"We were having a great time. It was a lot of fun," club president Hunter Williams said.

snip...

Some UF students chose a more traditional debate-watching forum and participated in a focus group sponsored by UF's student newspaper, The Independent Florida Alligator.

The atmosphere there was markedly laid-back as students joked about who was sexier in the 1970s -- Bush or Kerry.

No word yet on how panelists voted on that question, but the panel's one independent, three Democrats and five Republicans, agreed by a 7-2 margin that Bush had won the debate.

General consensus, at least in the media, declared Kerry the victor, but some students may have been viewing the debate from a different perspective.

"Kerry didn't connect with me," The Alligator quoted panelist Daniel Milian.

"Like that one word that I didn't even know what he meant -- Falluja? I need a dictionary to understand him."

1. Oh, now ...
First, they are college students -

Secondly, it's quite possible the last quote was just pullin' someone's leg.

Course, there is the 3rd possibility -- they are repubs!!;-)

2. How the journalists choose communal input
is extremely bad from any perspective, a side dodge from making their own comments that might rile some of their customers, and trivial and misleading at best with even ordinary folks falling into a performance mode with no bias examined. These independent and swing voters singled out by the media seem in my mind very well infiltrated as part of GOP policy and media laziness, and Dem innocence.

Attention journalist schools. As a journalistic old technique it should be jettisoned. That goes for a lot of editorial nostrums wearily repeated to the point of creating an informational threat in a time of crisis. Even ON 911, the media seemed locked on autopilot, one commentator AT THE SCENE of the burning buildings using the same calm, even smiling, demeanor he would use on exploiting a traffic accident. No shred of life like we used to have. The press is near moribund except with routine diatribes that also seem copied off some ancient playbook.

You guys do know that if it wasn't for the University of Florida inventing the tooth brush, it would have been called the Teeth Brush.

12. Jealous much?
You must have been denied from UF and decided it was better to spend 10x the tuition on a less respected school.

That being said. Im in Gators for Kerry and we usually outnumber the college republicans at most events.

No one who ever attended scUM, that's for sure.

Florida has had more National Merit Scholars in one year than ,

"You-can't-spell-scUM-without-UM" has in their history.

23. typical Florida
Universities in Florida have the widest gap between funding for athletics and funding for actual education. As the saying goes, "In the South, football is a religion."

If you're not a sports freak in Florida, you're just a freak.

32. They used a loaded deck again
They had more repugs than dems and 1 supposed independent.

If they used the actual ratio of registered dems and repugs in this town, they should have had more dems.

Most repugs switch to the Democratic Party around here just to get elected.
