1. Kerry apparently
told him that he (W) owned a lumber company.

W turned around and said "that news to me. Need some wood?" (or somthing like that)

KERRY: The president got $84 from a timber company that owns, and he's counted as a small business. Dick Cheney's counted as a small business. That's how they do things. That's just not right.

BUSH: I own a timber company?

4. This link will explain it.
http://www.needsumwood.com/

KERRY: The president got $84 from a timber company that owns, and he's counted as a small business. Dick Cheney's counted as a small business. That's how they do things. That's just not right.

BUSH: I own a timber company?

(LAUGHTER)

Need some wood?

From Factcheck.org

Bush is a part-owner of a timber company

?President Bush himself would have qualified as a "small business owner" under the Republican definition, based on his 2001 federal income tax returns. He reported $84 of business income from his part ownership of a timber-growing enterprise. However, 99.99% of Bush's total income came from other sources that year. (Bush also qualified as a "small business owner" in 2000 based on $314 of "business income," but not in 2002 and 2003 when he reported his timber income as "royalties" on a different tax schedule.)?

Bush & Cheney as "Small Business Owners"

To find examples of this we need look no farther than the top of the Bush-Cheney ticket:

President Bush himself would have qualified as a "small business owner" under the Republican definition, based on his 2001 federal income tax returns. He reported $84 of business income from his part ownership of a timber-growing enterprise. However, 99.99% of Bush's total income came from other sources that year. (Bush also qualified as a "small business owner" in 2000 based on $314 of "business income," but not in 2002 and 2003 when he reported his timber income as "royalties" on a different tax schedule.)
Vice President Cheney and his wife Lynne qualify as "small business owners" for 2003 because 3.5% of the total income reported on their tax returns was business income from Mrs. Cheney's consulting business. She reported $44,580 in business income on Schedule C, nearly all of it from fees paid to her as a director of the Reader's Digest . But giving the Cheneys a tax cut didn't stimulate any hiring; she reported zero employees.

11. New Job?
Since the bushmonger will be unemployed soon, maybe he can help run that business into the ground, too.

8. check out...
http://www.neeedsumwood.com/

and the transcript says:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6209704
<snip>
KERRY: You can’t stop all outsourcing, Charlie. I’ve never
promised that. I’m not going to, because that would be pandering.
You can’t.

But what you can do is create a fair playing field, and that’s
what I’m talking about.

But let me just address what the president just said.

Ladies and gentlemen, that’s just not true what he said. The
Wall Street Journal said 96 percent of small businesses are not
affected at all by my plan.

And you know why he gets that count? The president got $84 from
a timber company that owns, and he’s counted as a small business.
Dick Cheney’s counted as a small business. That’s how they do things.
That’s just not right.

BUSH: I own a timber company?

(LAUGHTER)

That’s news to me.

Most small businesses are Subchapter S corps. They just are.

14. Actually, it got a laugh
I was going to say that it was his funniest intentional joke of the series so far, but that wouldn't properly explain the audience reaction.

But this was later followed by his comment that he would not approve any judge who would approve of the Dred Scott Decision. It took me a while to figure out just what his point was. I guess he's against slavery.

12. crudely, as in late-night comedians...a "wood-y" is an erect penis...
Edited on Fri Oct-08-04 11:21 PM by amen1234
and in bush* attempt at humor "need some wood"...there are several interpretations, some of them sexual....

either way, it was a very bad bush* attempt at humor, and in this forum...IMO, it is no time for being funny....a Presidential debate on WAR, WMD, Health Care, the Economy, taxes, etc....what's so funny, bush*????

bush* seems to have this weird condescending attitude toward people...in that he insults them and thinks that's funny.....it's not funny that bush* is getting gigantic tax breaks from his own tax cuts, while American children go without health care...but bush* thinks it's something to laught about: "need wood?"....

16. Need wood?
I will when my natural gas bill goes up again this year. I don't think he meant it in a sexual way - he's not that quick, but you're right - it's condescending.

13. This is the line you'll hear people talking about
No win for Bush -

It was a juvenile line (if you think he meant it in a sexual way) and will turn off women

and

It shows he's a moron. Kerry knows more about his tax return than he knows himself.

I was REALLY nervous because Bush basically called Kerry a liar. Now Bush looks like the liar.

17. The real issue
is that, I don't think shrub actually knew he owned this company. This guy probably has more shelters and subsidies than most corporations. But he's the guy that connects with the people, right?

18. YES
And this should be the talking point. This guy is so rich and out of the mainstream that he doesn't even know what companies he owns shares in.

Excellent. Spread it around.
