Textile leaders submit petition for safeguard
10-9-04
By Donald W. Patterson Staff Writer
News & Record (Greensboro, NC)

Textile leaders have filed the first of several petitions asking the federal government to restrict imports from China after quotas end Jan. 1.

By accepting and approving the pending safeguard petitions, textile leaders say, the government can slow the growth of Chinese imports and protect thousands of U.S. jobs.

By filing on Friday, that forces the government to make its decision known prior to the presidential election on Nov. 2.

"There are dozens of countries around the world that need the U.S. to use the safeguard," said Johnson, the NCTO president. "That helps us make the case that China is a threat, not only to our industry but to industries around the world. Their necks are on the line just like ours."
