OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read please!!!!!!
I am so mad about this.  One of our local stations is owned by Sinclair.  I'm not sure what to do.

THE NATION
Conservative TV Group to Air Anti-Kerry Film
Sinclair, with reach into many of the nation's homes, will preempt prime-time shows. Experts call the move highly unusual.

By Elizabeth Jensen, Times Staff Writer

NEW YORK -- The conservative-leaning Sinclair Broadcast Group, whose television outlets reach nearly a quarter of the nation's homes with TV, is ordering its stations to preempt regular programming just days before the Nov. 2 election to air a film that attacks Sen. John F. Kerry's activism against the Vietnam War, network and station executives familiar with the plan said Friday.

Sinclair's programming plan, communicated to executives in recent days and coming in the thick of a close and intense presidential race, is highly unusual even in a political season that has been marked by media controversies.

Sinclair has told its stations -- many of them in political swing states such as Ohio and Florida -- to air "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal," sources said. The film, funded by Pennsylvania veterans and produced by a veteran and former Washington Times reporter, features former POWs accusing Kerry -- a decorated Navy veteran turned war protester -- of worsening their ordeal by prolonging the war. Sinclair will preempt regular prime-time programming from the networks to show the film, which may be classified as news programming, according to TV executives familiar with the plan.

Executives at Sinclair did not return calls seeking comment, but the Kerry campaign accused the company of pressuring its stations to influence the political process.

John Kerry is a real hero for standing up to the pressure on this topic. It would be absolutely horrible for us to turn a blind eye to the horrors and sad painful confusions experienced by OUR Veterans.

41. It should be for all tv stations owned by Sinclair Broadcasting
Not just the ABC affiliates.

The key is everyone should contact the stations in their local area connected with Sinclair Broadcasting and tell them that you will not be patronize their station or advertisers. Don't forget to contact the local advertisers too.

10. Cranking up the noise on this CAN be effective
Plenty of lead time here, and we've seen 'em shrink and wither in the spotlight before. So far this is on a couple of major blog sites, and I think it reaches the threshold of something that's not going to just be swallowed without comment.

All that needs to be done is for it to be framed as "a controversial programming decision" and that will either kill it or render it innefectual.

at the same time it would help. I don't think the ink is dry on the Michael Moore's pay per view deal. Maybe Spielberg would agree to give the major networks some kind of a blockbuster to run to draw away from Sinclair. What would everyone like to see that isn't in release right now? What is the most irresistible thing that they could air opposite Sinclair's Moonie garbage.

48. May Not Have Advertisers
If wealthy Republicans are paying for it, that may eliminate the need for other sponsors.

Nope, the only real hope is for the FCC (Federal Communication Commision) or FEC (Federal Election Commission) to intervene. Of course, there is no chance the FCC will intervene, I mean, it isn't like they're going to show a breast or something. But maybe the FEC, we can hope.

Yeah, it'd be like a major broadcasting group pre-empting normal programming to show 9/11. Not right.

31. Picket Lines Anyone???
Wouldn't it be nice while they're putting this show on inside, local DUers were putting on their own show outside the studios. Peaceful, but let 'em know they can't this is more abuse of their public broadcast licenses than you can take.

The Freepers made a lot of headlines in 2000 when they picketed Gore's house...didn't take many and they sure got a lot of ink. While the Sinclair stations will only have their security cameras trained on you, their competitors will bring the GOOD ones.

Complaining to the FEC will do nothing nor will the FCC...this one requires us taking this issue up directly with the voters.

Whose up for some good old free speech expression at their nearby Sinclair station?

Only slackers and other do-nothings watch those stations.

Not even in the big 5 here.

Barffy the Vampire is a typical program.

The people who watch these stations don't vote anyway.

No big loss here.

I am SOOOOOOO scared!

HA!

Even noticed the Buffalo stations are the former UHF and newer channels, too. Same thing, I believe.

35. Kerry must immunize this.
Kerry must take this on -- by speaking out BEFORE the film is shown and calling it out as the desperate propaganda it is. The message is that George Bush's cohorts can't support Bush's reckless record, so they're personally attacking a decorated veteran.

People's unease with Bush and our strong conviction is stronger than Moonie propaganda. Trying to take it off the air gives them strength -- we should not sink to their level of suppressing free speech.

SINCLAIR EXECUTIVES MAJOR BUSH CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTORS: Sinclair executives have contributed more than $16,500 to President Bush since 2000. This year, Sinclair CEO David Smith gave President Bush the maximum $2000 contribution. Before soft money contributions became illegal, Sinclair Broadcasting gave more than $130,000 to the president's political allies but no money to his opponents.

Let them know that you don't appreciate this, and that if THEY get on the wrong side of SINCLAIR, they could get "the treatment" too. This argument serves best if you are repped by a GOP bastard.

Those are OUR AIRWAVES. NOT SINCLAIR's. Federal Election Law is being violated. GET ON THE PHONE, write POSTCARDS, get pissed.

This is important--that crazy farker OWNS some of the swing states. Time to GET BUSY!

81. Here's a rebuttal film
This movie, "Hijacking Catastrophe: 9/11, Fear & the Selling of American Empire," picks up where Fahrenheit 911 left off.

It starts with background on some of the key players, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, etc. Then it talks about the evolution of the neo-con agenda of global domination through unilateral force from the "Wolfowitz Doctrine" that was dismissed in the early 90's through the Project for the New American Century today.

That's right! Finally! A movie that takes a sane, in depth look at PNAC!

They show the quotes from the September 2000 report, "Rebuilding America's Defenses; Strategy, Forces and Resources For a New Century", including the one about needing a "new Pearl Harbor" to speed things up.

Then they go on to show how this administration has used 9/11 to push their agenda, starting with the Patriot Act, Afghanistan and Iraq.

They talk about how "Shock and Awe" was directed at the world and not just the Iraqi army. Look at how powerful we are. Be afraid, be very afraid.

They talk about how this dream of empire is bankrupting our country. About how despite acting macho, the architects of this plan have no actual war experience.

They close by talking about what we can expect if the neo-cons are not stopped. It encourages fighting terror and fear with public debate and truth.

The DVD has two versions - the full movie which runs about an hour and an abridged version that runs about a half hour. It also includes extended 30 minute interviews and an examination of the Economics of Empire.

"Hijacking Catastrophe" is from The Media Education Foundation (www.mediaed.org ) and includes interviews with Lt. Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski, Scott Ritter, Daniel Elsberg, Norman Mailer, Noam Chomsky, Medea Benjamin and more as well as clips of news coverage of events.

It is in some theaters (list at the website) but not many and not for very long.

Buy the DVD or VHS - watch it - pass it around.

This is the movie we have been waiting for!

Don't take my word for it. The movie website has substantial film clips. Check it out for yourself.

DVD or VHS for $19.95

61. Any chance of getting a McCain reaction to this?
Frankly, I never know which side of the line McCain is going to come down on these days. But he did condemn both the original Swfitboat ad and the Sinclair blackout on Nightline when they read the names of fallen soldiers.

"U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) issued the following letter today to Mr. David Smith, President and CEO of Sinclair Broadcast Group, in response to the preemption of this evening's Nightline program:
I write to strongly protest your decision to instruct Sinclair's ABC affiliates to preempt this evening's Nightline program. I find deeply offensive Sinclair's objection to Nightline's intention to broadcast the names and photographs of Americans who gave their lives in service to our country in Iraq."

http://wearenotsheep.com/archives/2004/04/30/mccain-calls-sinclairs-nightline-boycott-unpatriotic

Is there any way McCain could be asked to comment on what Sinclair is doing now and any likelihood it would be helpful if he did?

64. Useful resources on Sinclair
Edited on Sat Oct-09-04 01:52 PM by starroute
AlterNet: The Death of Local News
http://www.alternet.org/story/15718

TV Barn's Mark Jeffries calls Sinclair the "Clear Channel of local news," a reference to the San Antonio, Texas, media giant that has grown from 40 to more than 1,200 stations today thanks to the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which relaxed radio ownership rules. But the parallels extend beyond their growth strategies. Jeffries describes Sinclair as having a "fiercely right-wing approach that makes Fox News Channel look like a model of objectivity," while Clear Channel is best known for sponsoring pro-war "Rallies for America" during the Iraq conflict. And like Clear Channel's CEO L. Lowry Mays -- a major Republican donor and onetime business associate of George W. Bush -- the Sinclair family, board, and executives ply the GOP with big money. Since 1997, they have donated well over $200,000 to Republican candidates.

Many links, including one to a story (which is no longer available online) about Sen. Mark Dayton of Minnesota writing to the FEC about the dangers of media consolidation posed by Sinclair. Perhaps Dayton might be another person to contact about the latest outrage.

67. Sinclair, VisionAir, and homeland security -- WTF?
Edited on Sat Oct-09-04 02:16 PM by starroute
Sinclair Broadcasting owns a share of several other corporations, most of them with an obvious connection to broadcasting or advertising. But it also owns a chunk of VisionAir, Inc., "a respected leader in public safety software," with ties to the military, homeland security, and law enforcement.

http://www.sbgi.net/business/ventures.shtml

The software has been found so effective in fact that one or more of the products have been selected by
· the U. S. Marine Corps for fire department, military police, and emergency management use at every Marine Corps base and Marine Corps Air Station in the world;
· the Pentagon’s Information Technology Management Division for use in one of the Pentagon’s operations centers; and
· for use by fire service command staff at six major U.S. military bases in Iraq

http://www.visionair.com/newsletter.asp

VisionAIR(R), a leading provider of public safety and criminal justice software, welcomes General Barry R. McCaffrey to the VisionAIR Board of Directors. General McCaffrey is a renowned expert on terrorism and homeland defense, who led the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division in the 1991 Gulf War, and a former Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. At retirement from active duty, he was the most highly decorated and youngest four-star general in the U.S. Army.

General McCaffrey remarked, "I believe strongly in the leadership team, mission, and strategy of VisionAIR. Their commitment to industry standards and client satisfaction are right on target with industry needs." VisionAIR's progressive approach to combating terrorism and crime in an increasingly precarious world attracted General McCaffrey to VisionAIR when he agreed to be the Keynote Speaker at the VisionAIR Annual Users' Conference in October of 2003.

On edit: I wonder if this cound have something to do with it?

http://www.mediageek.org/archives/002264.html

Sinclair Vice-President and on-air commentator Mark Hyman is a captain with an intelligence role in the U.S. Naval Reserves, who apparently sees no conflict of interest between his role as "journalist" and being on the payroll of Naval Intelligence. Hyman delights in his crusade to lambaste anyone who questions the war in Iraq, such as calling congresspeople who voted against a recent resolution of support for the war "just unpatriotic politicians who hate our military."

69. More on Mark Hyman's background in intelligence
This is from what appears to be his official bio:

http://www.newscentral.tv/station/bios/mhyman.shtml

He served briefly in the Army before attending college on an Army ROTC scholarship. He was later accepted to the U. S. Naval Academy from which he graduated in 1981. He served as a naval officer on ships assigned to the East and West coasts and he served in the U.S. Navy’s European headquarters in London. He has conducted worldwide travel with extensive time spent in the Middle East. He left active duty in 1989 and became employed as a civilian in the Office of Naval Intelligence, which included assignments with the U.S. On-Site Inspection Agency as a disarmament treaty weapons inspector in former Warsaw Pact countries. A Captain in the Naval Reserve, he has served in leadership positions in CIA’s National Warning Staff, the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office and he is currently a Commanding Officer in the Naval Reserve’s Space and Network Warfare Program.

Hyman seems to be at the heart of Sinclair's role as propaganda organ. It's his wingnut on-air editorials that the "Counterpoint" blog I referenced above is dedicated to refuting. I'm starting to suspect, shall we say, a direct intelligence role in what is going on here.

79. McCaffrey is also on the Board of Trustees of Mitretek
I honestly don't know if I have a hold of something highly relevant here, of if I'm just following the Tinfoil Trail off into the swamps of confusion. But Sinclair and Mark Hymen appear to have certain connections that are, to say the least, highly disquieting.

http://www.disinfopedia.org/wiki.phtml?title=Mitretek_Systems

In its somewhat convoluted "History", Mitretek links its origin to The MITRE Corporation. MITRE was itself spun off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) MIT Lincoln Laboratory which began in the 1950s as the Lincoln Project at MIT. The Lincoln Laboratory was created to develop ground radar air defense systems for the United States. The MITRE Corporation was established as the "system engineer and overseer for the development of this highly complex system."

With the desire to focus more attention on its DOD/FAA FFRDC components, MITRE elected to divide its defense and non-defense operations, and thus Mitretek Systems was formed as an independent organization unrelated to The MITRE Corporation in January, 1996. Mitretek works in information and telecommunications technologies in support of government activities and also performs leading-edge work in the health care and environmental areas.

The separation of the "non-defense" Mitretek Systems from the "defense" MITRE Corporation as "independent and unrelated organizations" is emphasized twice within the organization's "History". Close examination of the highly detailed Mitretek web site will find the organization's operation anything but simple and basic.

There has been an entire homeland security industry growing up pretty much in the shadows, and even here on DU people are largely unaware of it. A certain amount of information was brought out a year ago in a thread devoted to the connections within the IT industry of the Black Box Voting companies:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=217888

The private military contractors, like CACI International, which was the employer of the civilian interrogators at Abu Ghraib, are part of the same complex. See my post from last spring at:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=1512673#1512921

I realize this thread isn't the best place to bring all this up, and I don't mean to be a threadjacker. But this stuff is deadly important, we all need to know about it, and the fact that it has a connection to Sinclair Broadcasting makes me more uncomfortable than I can easily say.

77. yes it is.. and they made the followiing statement
"While the Sinclair Broadcast Group honors the memory of the brave members of the military who have sacrificed their lives in the service of our country, we do not believe such political statements should be disguised as news content. As a result, we have decided to preempt the broadcast of Nightline this Friday on each of our stations which air ABC programming."

I guess they've changed their mind.

Sinclair Broadcasting's David Smith Busted In Prostitution Sting

THIS IS THE GUY WHO BANNED THE 'NIGHTLINE' BROADCAST OF K.I.A. SOLDIERS IN 8 CITIES LAST NIGHT, AND WROTE A LETTER DEFENDING HIS DECISION TO SEN. JOHN MCCAIN.

David Deniston Smith, president and chief executive officer of Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., was charged with committing an unnatural and perverted sex act in a company-owned Mercedes. He was arrested in an undercover sting a Read and St. Paul streets, a downtown corner frequented by prostitutes.

Police said Mary DiPaulo, 31, ran across the street to a 1992 Mercedes, registered to Sinclair, and got in on the passenger side. Police followed the car onto the Jones Falls Expressway, where they said they witnessed the two engage in oral sex while Smith drove north.

there are many reference sub-links in these collected sources, see original link: http://atrios.blogspot.com/2004_04_25_atrios_archive.ht...

He is still the prexy and CEO of Sinclair.
