Election 2004 > Federal
Analysis: Bush improves but Kerry still strong in
Round Two

ST. LOUIS –After eight days of unrelentingly bad
news, President Bush needed some good news. In
his second debate with challenger John Kerry Friday
night, though, the best the president got was that he
held his own.
Bush was clearly stronger, more poised and less
irritated than he was in the first debate last week in
Florida. But Kerry counter-punched effectively, and
likely did nothing to lose the converts he won in
Miami.
"This debate solidified the voters who came to
(Kerry) a week ago," said Frank Luntz, a political
analyst who assembled a group of largely
undecided voters in St. Louis to watch the televised
clash

"Bush's passion and focus were much more
compelling than last week," said Luntz. "But he fell
short in wooing back the swing voters that he lost"
during the first debate...

2. This is REPUBLICAN pollster
Frank Luntz, who was recently let go from his gig at MSNBC because of his partisianship. I see he is not identified as a repuke here.;(

3. Very interesting
especially the end, where a group of undecideds gave their opinions. 9 of the 21 thought, before the debate, that Kerry was an aloof patrician, but by the end of the debate, all nine had changed their minds. The most telling was the equity trader who had personally benefitted by the Bush tax cuts who said he was leaning towards Kerry.

5. Luntz was also quoted in an "analysis" by Gannett New Service...
without IDing as a GOP pollster...

In fact, our Gannett paper, the Las Cruces(NM) Sun-News didn't bother to run a NEWS story on the debate...just this "analysis" on page 3A....
