2. my submission (kick)
I am a Security Mom and I support John Kerry.

I worked as an intelligence and counterintelligence analyst under Presidents Reagan, Bush Sr., and Clinton, as an enlisted soldier, a reservist, and as a civilian for the army. I’ve flown to other countries to help write bilateral security policies for classified programs. I’ve given briefings in the Pentagon.

I severed my ties with the military in 2002, because it became increasingly difficult for me to reconcile my values with the direction we were heading in. I quit to take a job that paid less than half of what I had been making. (My salary has since been halved again because of layoffs.)

Before the Soviet Union broke up, I took my daughter, then 8 months old, to Moscow and Leningrad. We were welcomed as Americans with astounding warmth. On public transportation, we were told not to pay because we were guests of their country. In a restaurant, people we didn’t know passed my daughter from table to table, toasting her, making speeches about how important it was to repair relations between our countries after the damage of the Cold War.

The contrast between those days and now is grim. We disguise our nationality when we travel, making sure we don’t wear clothes that look “too American.” Worse yet, we need to disguise our political beliefs from our own government, in a climate where people can be arrested in a public space for simply wearing a shirt with the name of a candidate running for office.

The current administration has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, abroad and at home. As a direct result, both abroad and at home, my family is now less secure.

President Bush has treated diplomacy as if it were the punch line of a joke. I will be voting for John Kerry, because he understands the importance of diplomacy and international relations.

3. Here's my entry
I don't know if this will get added, since I'm not a mom, but I think my story applies in some sense...

I'm not sure if my story counts technically speaking,
but I believe that I am not the only woman who feels
this way.

My name is Grace. I am in my mid-thirties and have
been married for seven years. I will soon be at an
age where the decision to have a child will become a
"now or never" situation. However, since George Bush
took office, I am terrified at the thought of bringing
a child into a world where he is the President of the
United States.

Why?

Because the actions of this administration have caused
anti-American sentiment to come to a boil all over the
world and put assault weapons on the streets at home.

Because the actions of this administration have cause
Americans not to trust each other. We point out our
differences more and tolerate less. We're divided by
rhetoric and partisan politics. We allow the civil
rights of all Americans to be threatened by a few who
hold certain beliefs.

The actions of this administration have hastened the
destruction of our environment, laid waste to our
economy, depleted our resources and ruined our health
care and educational systems.

How do I decide to bring a child into a world where
Americans are losing respect abroad and fighting with
each other at home? How should that make me feel
safer? How do I decide if I can afford the financial
burden if the child becomes ill, or I lose my job? How
can I send my multi-ethic child to school where he or
she could be bullied by children who's parents have
taught them (either through words or by example) that
being different is bad? Where the teachers are too
overworked and underpaid to notice? And, what if my
child were gay, would he or she be a second-class
citizen in George Bush's America?

I know that nothing is guaranteed in life, but I
believe the Bush Administration has destroyed any
semblance of security I have felt as an American. Yes
I am very worried about security, but I guess I won't
be a security *mom* until George Bush is out of
office. I hope I don't have to wait another four years.

6. I love this story.
I Am a Mother of Two, and a Strong Supporter of
John Kerry and John Edwards.

“When I first heard the story of the ‘Security Moms’, the Republican-spun ones, I was outraged.

The whole thing implied that if I—as a mother—supported John Kerry, I wasn’t concerned with my children’s safety. How absurd!

President Bush has done more to make America unsafe in his one term than any one president should be allowed to do. He was initially against forming a Homeland Security department. It was only at the insistence of the Democrats in Congress that he finally conceded.

And even now, the Department of Homeland Security is woefully underfunded. We’re losing first responders at a rapid rate. Who knows how long it will now take the paramedics to get to my child if, God forbid, something were to happen? A recent study shows that a loss of just a few paramedics or police officers or firefighters slows response time by approximately 10 minutes. 10 minutes could mean life or death.

John Kerry and John Edwards have not only shown a clear and concise plan for getting our troops safely out of Iraq, but have shown a clear and concise plan for strengthening our own national security. My vote is clear.”

9. I am a security Mom
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 05:21 PM by vetwife
Bush has not only made it unsafe for average Moms and Dads who worry about their children normally, he has made it unsafe by not funding all of the police and firefighters. He has agitated the entire world and made this country very divided.

His division of America has turned vet against vet, caused family feuds by protraying and saying one is with him or against him. Using fear and smear, not to mention the terrorists now have access to Assault rifles. We have home grown terrorists like McVeigh and Nichols who are being pushed by hate mongers such as pundits for Bush such as Limbaugh, Coulter and Hannity. This has not made America safer. We have hatred dividing this nation and there is no one to blame but George W. Bush and his arrogant administration.

We have different faiths being called cults, we have an intolerance for free speech and a media that is blinded by greed.

I also have a diabetic daughter who could benefit from stem cell research. Is he working to make her safer? I have a grown son who has been out of work for over a year and very depressed, did he make me worry less about his mental health and no insurance? No way.
This security Mom has 10 times more to worry about now than I would have under a Kerry administration. There are all kinds of terror.
Bush has managed to make us less safe under all of the kinds out there.
