Coors is a horrible candidate.

They are currently debating on MTP.

7. Coors
wants to lower the drinking age to 18, opposes the death penalty and doesn't think the patriot act should be changed.

Salazar takes opposite positions. Both blame each other for starting negative campaigning. Coors' position on Iraq is the same as Bush, Salazar seemed closer to Kerry than Bush. Coors struggled to express all of his opinions, Salazar only some of his.

I thought it was a lame debate on all sides.

22. Salazar is Super Conservative
almost a republican. There were rumors that he would switch to GOP after being elected. He said he wouldn't, but he will break with dems and vote GOP, count on it.

conservative. He first supported Lieberman for the presidency. I'm not wild about voting for him but he's a hell of a lot closer on the issues to me than Pete Coors, who I would never vote for.

While Salazar does not seem to be a great candidate, Coors is just an embarassment.

No conflict of interest between "family values" and Coors marketing strategies?

I feel for you, Colorado.

He saved us from the redistricting fiasco not too long ago--something that no Texas Dem, for instance, could manage to do.

Ken will be a great Democratic senator.

Fortunately I got a good three week contract for work. Unfortunately it has to be done in Florida and that takes me off the canvassing and phone banking until the 27th. Somebody in Denver help take up my slack!!

14. Salazar is the quintessential DLC candidate
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 10:59 AM by Bryan
I voted for Mike Miles in the primary (hell, I voted for the Green candidate when Salazar ran for State AG in 2002).

Salazar's odious business ties aside, he's an experienced public servant and a good Democrat (he fought hammer and tong against the Texas-style redistricting the Repubs were trying to push through). Pete Coors is a cronyist dolt with a head full of fuzzy-headed laissez-faire "the government doesn't know how to spend your money" horseshit. I find the choice unambiguous.

11. Salazar is a good candidate.
I got to hear him speak in front of an audience of about 150 (mostly GOP) independent pharmacists this summer. I even got to shake his hand! He seemed to leave a good impression on the bunch, but after all their former attorney was Dem. Congressional candidate Mike Feeley.

Salazar has to play it safe on several social issues because he knows that should he appear to be anything besides centrist he'll be finished in Colorado. Think about how big and mean the GOP attack dogs are nationally, then double the rhetoric and vileness and you'll have an idea of how down and dirty they are in Colorado.

He has a good environmental record, and he saved us from the nefarious re-districting scheme (as did the state SC, which is 5-2 Democrats). Furthermore, as the AG, he has the credibility to speak with authority on things like why the Patriot Act needs to be revised, and why the drinking age shouldn't be lowered, etc. He's an experienced attorney and the state's top law enforcement official (he's garnered the endorsement of the police groups). His opponent, however, is a foam-for-brains beer man who seems to think that having commercials filled with T&A and knowing how to sell beer to thirsty consumers makes him qualified to be a Senator.

Salazar may look like a bit of a DINO in the campaign, but he'll make us proud. Besides, anyone is better than Allard.

23. You're welcome. Miles would be a great Senator
but he's not cut out for Colorado politics. He's more of a Dennis Kucinich type candidate, whereas Salazar is more like a Wesley Clark. I think that Miles would do well to run for congress in Southwest Colorado or the Denver area. I think he would run well in more progressive areas, but statewide there are too many people who are more into those who project the "tough-guy" persona.

Interestingly, Salazar has totally cornered the market on the cowboy image. It's rather interesting to have the Democrat finally be in position to call his opponent a wimp.

25. Oh yeah.
Cowboy hat, pictures of him actually riding on a horse (something Bush can't do, since he's afraid of them) with the mountains in the background. Coloradans eat that stuff up. Coors and his plaid shirts can't come close.

Plus, Salazar's family has been in Colorado since the 1500's! Beat that, Coors.

The suburbanization of Brighton hasn't hurt, either....

35. Most people didn't know that about him.
They thought he was a schoolteacher. That's just the way it is. Hopefully he will be governor, but he just didn't have the money to get his message out. Of course, that was in part because he was totally ignored by the DSCC. Perhaps he'd do better in a statewide race where foreign policy wasn't an issue, but I wouldn't count on it. I still think he should run for Congress.

But I know that in Colorado he wouldn't win if he came off to liberal. He's a solid candidate and is clearly better than the befuddled Coors who shows a complete lack of understanding of anything. I don't see how owning a beer company qualifies one to be senator.

lots of money to run his smear campaing with, name recognition with nearly all votors, especially ones who don't know politics well. it also doesn't hurt him that there are TWO Salazars running for offices in colorado, Ken, and John, many votors will confuse the smear campaigns currently against both Salazars.

36. The Coors family funded Jesse Helms's campaigns for years
I have a big resentment against the Coors family for that reason (and others). Helms - for those who are mercifully unaware - was a multi-term senator from North Carolina, somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun on the political spectrum.

Helms and his operatives invented a powerful and unique form of dirty campaigning here in normally polite North Carolina. The Bushes have made good use of those techniques over the years. Remember the Willie Horton ad that Poppy Bush used against Dukakis? Straight out of the Helms playbook.

Now Elizabeth Dole (the junior senator in NC) is making good use of the same ugly techniques.

Dubya's campaign approach is identical to that of Helms. Make up lies about your opponent, and when all else fails, scare the voters and appeal to their basest lizard-brain instincts.
