Support for Dems now almost equal to Repubs in Kansas r/w stronghold!
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 10:38 AM by saywhat
According to the Kansas City Star: "For the last dozen years, area residents and businesses consistently have given more money to Republicans. But that Republican tilt has eroded from a 71 percent-29 percent margin over Democrats to 52 percent-48 percent this year."

If the author's analysis is correct, what's going on in KS could represent a huge shift in the political power score card. This area of Kansas is the wealthiest and most populous in the state. I'm actually starting to wonder, despite all the riggeed polls, could Kansas go Dem this year??

See the rest of this article for a real eye popper:

western Kansas. Although many are in their 70s and 80s, they are activists and they VOTE.

Probably about a hundred or more cousins and second cousins, too.

All in all, you can count on about 150 yellow-dog votes this year in Kansas.

That's damn respectable, if you ask me.

Edit: about 25 votes in LIBERAL alone. I love that!

3. And, of course, Lawrence is about 95% Democratic.
But I am amazed about Johnson County. That's where most of the money and power reside in KS (although people like to live in trendy little Lawrence, they work in Johnson County). Topeka is probably hopeless, but it's practically a ghost town now.

2. When visiting my parents in Overland Park, there are many more K/E
signs than B/C.

They also have one of their crazy RW'ers running against Dennis Moore so I know of quite a few moderate Repubs who will be voting for Moore or not voting.

The battle between the moderate Repubs and the crazy RW Repubs is usually the most interesting political battle in KS and alienates half of the Repubs from the other half.

If moderate Repubs either stay home or vote for Kerry, that is definitely good news.

4. Do you think there's a snowball's chance of Kerry taking KS?
I'm new to the area, but I have to say I was pretty shaky before moving because of all the fundies. I've been pleasantly surprised though.

5. no
The only poll I've seen is Bush is ahead in KS 60-40.

Still, four in ten Kansans are planning to vote Kerry - and I suspect that number will spike when some moderate Republicans end up voting Kerry. We're not so outnumbered as people would lead you to think.

10. LOL!
Mine just runs for cover when she hears me screaming! Poor baby, I'm trying to be more considerate of her feelings, so I turn off the boob tube whenever he appears. During the debates I had to keep reassuring her that I still loved her, etc.

9. I think the battle between the fundies and the more secular, fiscal
conservative type Repubs is the real fight in KS. In Overland Park, since it is a suburb to a city, it isn't exactly evangelical center.

My Mom said Falwell came and campaigned for the Repub congressional candidate and that was the kiss of death for him in Johnson County.

People are so embarrassed of the Kate O'Connors and the Creationism wing that are trying to control the schools and state house.

There is a Dem Gov of KS now but if Kerry wins KS, he will win everywhere in a landslide.

11. Have you heard that the wingnuts are going to try and reinstitute
mandated teaching of creationism in public schools? The effort is being kept under wraps, but somebody I know who's very plugged in has mentioned this is going on.

15. yes, that's true
There is now a conservatie majority on the state board of ed and they will be changing the standards again to get rid of evolution. They ran on the platform this summer and were elected in August.

16. I hope your mom is right about Falwell
and Kris Kobach's chances in the election.

Kobach is frickin nuts. Former aid to Ashcroft and campaign worker for Bush.

And he has a jillion signs up all over the place.

BTW, Kobach's platform is terrorism and family values. That's it. Nothing about health care, education, the environment or any other issues besides terrorism and gay marriage.

6. KC is a red/blue city

I used to live in Kansas City - the Missouri side of the city was predominantly Democrat, the Kansas side, Republican. I always had a lot more fun on the Missouri side (Country Club Plaza, Westport, Royals Stadium, etc.). Tells you something about how politics can poison an area....

For some reason I didn't think it was necessary. I must have registered with them some time ago because I could search for and read the article.

I have been registered for years and about half the time, I can't get access to anything on that site. It won't let me register or read anything. I have emailed them but they have never gotten back to me.

18. If Kansas went blue
you would see a celebration like you would if the Red Sox won the World Series. We would fly out of our houses and start setting Bush /Cheney/Kobach signs on fire. We'd roll cars over with Jesus fish signs on them. We would have a hillbilly orgy in the streets.

Seriously, it sucks to vote here. I live right on the edge of that very wealthy supposed Republican area and for the last twenty years we spend the weeks after the election trying to find one person who voted Republican. That's why it's such a pisser that every four years Kansas is red.

Anything can happen. This year there are Kerry/Edwards signs in yards of some of the priciest homes. I'm gettin' my bottle rockets and matches ready!
