2. There's not much you can do.......................
I've noticed a rash of this happening in my area as well. The Kerry/Edwards signs are stolen or damaged, but I haven't seen the same level of disrespect for Bush/Cheney signs. I guess that shows us who the infantile, Democracy hating folks in the world are.

3. I put Vasoline all over it.
Hopefully it will make it a little more difficult to steal. Next time it will be staples.

28. Add cayenne pepper over the vaseline
Even when it rained on my sign the red goo would get to them if the heat from the pepper didn't.

4. Mine was damaged Friday night...
Someone suggested buying one of those motion sensor things and fastening it will velcro to the inside of the sign. My husband was concerned it may go off with a stiff breeze or in the rain.

If it happens again I'm going to put double sided tape all over the sign and sprinkle something on the tape that will make the vandals sorry if they put their paws on my sign. I just haven't figured out what yet.

5. maybe hot sauce?
Maybe douse it in some really hot sauce? Insane chili sauce that makes your skin burn :) That'll give the conservative vandals some spice in their life!

26. I suggested habanero peppers
with the fervent hope the freeptard would feel the need to pee before he washed his hands.

Another suggestion to be used if there are NO chilren nearby would be to rub the parts most likely to be grabbed by a thief with poison ivy. Then hope he feels the need to pee before he washes his hands.

Then there's the all night vigil in a lawn chair with a shotgun in your lap.

7. Cayenne PEPPER
....and garnish the sign with poison ivy. Then, tape a small note to the sign, observable only when you approach it, that says 24 HOUR VIDEO SURVEILLANCE ON THIS SIGN...You're BUSTED, ASSHOLE!

6. Put a sign next to it that says:
A Bush/Cheney supporter trespassed in my yard, and destroyed my private property just to prevent you from reading this sign! Are you sure you can support such behavior?

14. Whatever you do...
Remember, someone innocent could be affected. If I put hot sauce or poison ivy (I've heard that suggested) on my sign, one of the neighborhood kids could get into it. We have kids all over the place here. Any one of my daughter's friends could brush up against it, or move it to play some game in the yard and get something all over them. Sorry, but for the kids' sake, it's not worth it. That's just my take on it.

24. also an innocent
cat or dog. An animal would be in misery after licking hot sauce.

Much better to watch your sign--and run the vandals off--getting their license plate number!

29. So was mine, on a busy street
A nice 4 foot by 2 foot sign I had just put up in the morning was gone by 5 p.m. the same day. I reported it to the police and to the local Democratic party. Not much else you can do.

There have been a lot of signs stolen here in Western Wisconsin. What a bunch of thugs.

19. We replaced ours with a bigger sign
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 04:14 PM by FightingIrish
This one ( 4 feet by 8 feet)is mounted on a reinforced plywood base. To get to it you have to cross a ditch, poison oak, a barbed wire fence and several other niceties. We lost the last one ( 2 feet by 4 feet) on a Saturday night so last night we camped out.

20. You need a motion sensor which triggers flood lights and an audio response
from a bullhorn attached to your house.

You can use your imagination regarding the audio response.
Here's a suggestion:

"WARNING! You are trespassing, you are being photgraphed-the results of which will be forwarded to the local authorities for prosecution under the severest penality of the law!"

:D

23. What I did....
I went to Lowe's and bought a sturdy metal sign frame along with two pieces of Plexiglas cut to fit the interior of the metal sign. I screwed the Plexiglas into the frame with a Kerry/Edwards sign in between it. Then, I took an iron mallet and hammered the sign into the ground almost to the base of the frame. Since the sign is on a hill, its proximity to the ground does not affect visibility. After the sign was in the ground, I sprayed WD40 all along the metal frame to make it difficult to hold and pull the sign out (which is difficult anyway due to the depth I drove it).

I haven't had any problems since this.

Good luck!

25. put straight pins into the edges, pointing outward.
i had my sign stolen a few weeks ago, so i put up two new ones yesterday.

i took some 2-inch straight pins and folded over a little material around the edges, then poked the pins through. keeps them nice and taut. probably 20-30 pins across the top and down the sides of each sign.

of course, putting two in my yard -- one close to the road near the edge of my property, where someone could grab it quickly and easily -- is akin to hunting in a baited field.

best case scenario is that they'll grab it and i'll hear them, which would let me open the front door and sick my 80 lb shepherd/retriever mix on them. while she's chasing the slovenly, corpulent, slack-jawed republican around his car, i can get his license plate number and/or knock out a headlight or two with the louisville slugger i have by the front door in the event of such an opportunity.

:-)
