OMG Did Bush really say this in Ohio (ALERTprobably just fake news)i
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 04:54 PM by chookie
ALERT! There is NO CONFIRMATION of this story. It appears to be a spoof -- exceedingly well done that fooled some people a la Mercury Theater Halloween War of the Worlds.

I have NOT deleted this thread because I was not the only person fooled, and wish it to remain to assure others that it is not factual, and to alert anyone who may hear it later not to be fooled by it.

I will contact Air America and advise them that this was a bit too close to the news break, and done in a manner too close to legitimate reporting, and that it fooled at least some people, and that they may consider that in the future, particularly given the fact that the president is already so provenly insane that something like this, however humorously intentioned, but well be mistaken for the truth.

-----
my original post

I've been listening to Air America all afternoon. On their 5PM news break, they reported that Bush made a statement in Ohio in which he said he believed that abortion should be illegal, but that he would make an exception for the mothers of his Democratic opponents.

The announcer went on to say that Scott McClelland, when asked to clarify, said that the president was just saying that some people should have never been born, and that in this, a lot of people agree with him.

I checked DU, checked some of the news sites, and found no reference to this.

Anyone else hear this? This, if true, is by far the most outrageous thing I have heard from this administration and that's up against some really tough competition.

PS I am not making this up.

No mention of him being in Ohio. This sounds way too "good" to be true. Be careful spreading this at all. It could totally backfire.

I wasn't sure where he was. I guess this tells us this is untrue. Thank heavens.

I am going to contact Air America and report my experience, because I really was fooled by this. They do a lot of funny things, but this did not seem to be a skit.

12. If Air America is spoofing this, I am angry
I have seen no independent confirmation of this, therefore I am assuming that this was indeed spoof news.

However, folks, to the very best of my recollection (i heard this 20 minutes ago) it was not during a funny part of the broadcast, but during a news break. If I made a grave error of judgement, I apologize, but I only reported it because I myself was requesting confirmation from the many eyes and ears of DU.

In any case, the way it was presented was certainly not in any spoofy manner, and given the followups with Scott McClelland that they claimed to have, it seemed legitimate, if bizarre.

I am still endeavoring to get details.

17. Spoof
I think I heard this the other day... they have a sort of "old timey" Walter Winchell type announcer doing it? It's not quite obvious that it's a spoof though... needs a disclaimer or something to prevent this type of confusion.

And in a couple weeks, don't believe the reports of aliens landing in New Jersey on Halloween night.

21. I agree, chookie.
I was the original poster of the other thread about this. :hi:

I agree with you being angry with Air America about this. Yes, you're right...this was NOT presented in a "spoof, jokelike" manner. It sounded more professional and serious.

On the other hand, it is a repeat of a "Majority Report" from Thursday. Janeane actually commented it on right after, and if was supposed to have happened today, how can she comment on it on Thursday...before it happened? I am know smiting my forehead and rolling my eyes. :-)

24. There is no independent confirmation
Assume to be a spoof.

I just sent Air America some feedback about how this bit of fake news was a bit too close to the regular news break, and was done in such a manner that it mislead me and at least some others, and that they needed to be careful about this kind of "Mercury Theater" stuff.

30. I never listened to majority report until today
I just got broadband, and am listening to Air America for the first time.

I have enjoyed the commentary and the funny little jokes, and was well aware that this was their format.

But damned if this didn't fool me. It was done very "professionally," wasn't it? I think I can be at least partly excused for being stupid about this.

Oh well, I am going to sleep in the dog house with Dan Rather tonight.

29. I did
But it is not being "CBS"ed -- it was rather more like the infamous Mercury Theater War of the Worlds broadcast.

I feel bad to have posted this, and to have been fooled, but, I must say in my defence, the piece aired between 5 and 5:05 PM this Sunday evening, very close to the legitimate news break, and it was done in such a manner that it sounded real. I am not the type to believe Martians are attacking just because I hear it, but I do believe that Bush is so flipped out that he might say something like this, and that the WH PR would try to spin it for him.

As I stated above, I am contacting Air America to let them know they should be aware that there are idiotic rubes like myself who did not catch on that this was just a joke, and advise them to broadcast joke news not immediately after the legitimate news break.

31. But this whole thing still reflects badly on Bush
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 05:16 PM by patsified
because it is just so typical and so believable... he does shit like this all the time, and Scott has to come along and wipe up the mess.

Look, they stole an election, looted the treasury, invaded an innocent country, for starters. As a result, there is nothing that could be attributed to Bush that we wouldn't believe these days. And that says a whole f*cking lot more about HIM than it does about US.

Let's give ourselves a break here.
