CBS just did an article on not letting the mentally challanged vote. |
|
They had a researched who said people should be asked two questions.
- How do you choose the President? - How do you know who wins?
Do you guys think this is reasonable?

votes single issue, and against his or her best interests, is challenged. As for mentally challenged people, I feel that the questions asked are reasonable. I've worked with mentally challenged adults, and some are capable of voting, while others are not.

6. Seems a "great way" to exclude immigrants to me.....purely because of |

language barriers. So, I'm concerned this may be behind the whole idea.

9. I have a "mentally challenged" aunt, who will probably vote for Bush. |

She lives in a group home, and her caregiver is a devout Catholic who has anti-choice stickers all over her car. She holds tremendous sway over my aunt, who has a mental age of about 6.
Despite that, I would fight like hell to help her keep her voting rights. She loves George Bush. She says that he loves God, and that he loves her.
I'm glad she's voting. I wish she was voting for Kerry, but I cannot tell you how much it means to me that she can vote. It is one of the many freedoms she now has that we had to fight for, after she had been institutionalized for a large part of her life.
I'm proud of her even though she'll vote for the enemy.
Edit: She could probably easily answer the two questions if coached. Whether the poll workers could understand her speech is a different story.
