Nobel Peace Prize goes to George W Bush for inventing the Hydrogen Car
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 06:26 PM by opihimoimoi
Saving Mankind from huge energy shortages which would mean less food, less transportation, less fun.

Bush has worked very hard on this project and revealed the existence of his invention on Friday last in Mo.

At the debate woth Sen Kerry, Bush described the car as a Hydrogen car that is lighter than air, "It will float from Point A to Point B." sez the Dufus in charge.

6. Seriously, here is what I don't understand about Hydrogen Cars
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 06:35 PM by Xipe Totec
Where are we going to get the hydrogen to run them? Sure, hydrogen burns cleanly, but you have to manufacture the hydrogen which takes energy. Where do you get the energy to make hydrogen? Well, either fossil fuels or nuclear. So where is the environmental benefit?

8. They'll get it from hydrogen mines on the moons of Jupiter
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 06:47 PM by htuttle
That's one of the reasons Bush's Mars Mission project is so important -- the hydrogen miners are going to need to go someplace for R & R. It's hard work, you know.

11. Hydrogen Rant from a Automotive Engineer
I don't know if anybody has had a good rant on hydrogen on DU... Here it is anyway, people ,ay know this already, but here goes:

First, despite what you read, hydrogen powered engines (not fuel cells) do not have low emissions. Their tailpipe emissions of NOx are on par with diesel vehicles. Their efficiency also is not very good.

Second, Hydrogen is NOT a fuel source. Hydrogen is an energy storage medium, just like a battery. Since hydrogen can not be found in it's free gaseous form, it must be derived from another energy source. Currently, that is natural gas, which we are running out of rapidly.

The dream of the future is hydrogen produced from electricity by elecrolysis, which is basically a fuel cell operating in reverse. At best, about half of the energy coming in gets turned into H2. This H2 is then transported to a refueling station, acring more losses. The fuel cell in the vehicle converts the H2 back into electricity with another loss of energy of over 50%. In this simple analysis, you lost 75% of your electricity. This is actually optomistic...

A more direct path is to produce your electricity, transport it over the existing electrical grid, and use it to charge an electric vehicle. The only drawback here is electric vehicle range and recharge time. But for most daily driving, that is not an issue. The efficiency of this process is much, much better. Almost twice as good as George's fuel cell. The EV1 failed in California because of the lead-acid battery's used. With the advent of mass produced hybrid electric vehicles, a redesigned EV1 with the nickel-metal hydride batteries would be a much improved car in both range and price.

Third, the emissions are not zero. You need to slap on all of the emissions that occured upstream of the vehicle. With today's power mix, that means a fuel cell powered by elecrolysis is a coal powered car, since that is where we get our electricity from. Coal is the worst CO2 producing fuel we have...

Don't get me wrong, fuel cell's have a place in the future. But they are not all of the hype that the Mr. Bush says they are.

Kerry policy on renewables, to me at least, is a much more effective near term plan.

If anybody wants specific info on this, let me know.

that people here may already know this.

At least all the people on this thread know that it is BS, just like most of what Bush says...

24. The original poster's point is well-taken.
Giving the Nobel Peace Prize to a Kenyan environmentalist is just as absurd as giving it to Dumbya for developing the hydrogen car.

While combatting deforestation in Kenya is a great cause, it has zero to do with peace.

has something to do with war.
