About those "75% of Al Qaeda killed or captured"

Where did this come from? How can anyone possibly know how many people are in this shadow organization? So my question is, why hasn't Kerry answered this when Bush brings up in the debates?

1. 75% of the "known" members

let's say there are 2,000 member, but we only know of 100.
capture 75, and voila, 75% of the known members are captured.

meanwhile, there are still 1925 members, plus another 2,500 who signed up as soon as shrub sent troops into iraq, plus another 3,500 as soon as shrub uttered the word "crusade".

2. they went to the Al Qaeda website and reviewed the volunteer list

posted there. You know, the one where you get iPod covers for killing 5 westerners, a leather iPod cover with your initials if you car bomb a Humvee with US troops, etc.

18000 Al Qaeda - about 3 times the number on 911 - are around today
