One Issue Voters
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 08:19 PM by Bluzmann57
I'm sure we all have encountered at least one or two in our lives. I work with one and there's no changing his mind. First, a little background. There are three guys running around my work place who are wearing Bush/Cheney stickers on their hard hats. One is a supervisor whose brother was the head of the Scott County Republicans for a couple of years. One listens to Limbaugh and company and believes every word. I decided that those two were not even worth wasting my breath on, so I approached the third guy. I asked him if he'd ever voted in an election in his life and he said "Yes, once". I congratulated him for exercising his right to vote and then asked him why he was supporting bush. He said he "couldn't support a baby killer". I asked him if he was talking about abortion and he said yes. I tried asking him about the death penalty, which he claims to support, and sending thousands of our young people to die in an illegal war. He changed the subject, but he kept hammering on the abortion point. I once again congratulated on his decision to vote, although I have a few doubts about whether he really will. It should be noted that we are a Union shop and this guy is a scab, as is the Limbaugh listener. This guy is a lost cause, but if any of you meet any one issue voters, it would be nice to try and convince them about other issues, even obvious hillbillies like this guy at work.

12. why not address the issue directly?
I know you think abortion is killing babies, but how would you feel if you were raped by your father and got pregnant? Would YOU want that abomination growing inside you???

fight their arguments with their arguments... *wink*

2. It occured to me that his issue was something that has nothing to do with
him. Unless his girlfriend made a choice he didn't agree with, I think some republicans are picking an issue like this to justify voting for such a failure. Silly how the thought of losing is so important.

3. At least you tried....
He may be one who could never admit it..but agree with you once you stated your point. Hopefully he will think about what you said...and in the privacy of a voting booth... choose Kerry.

4. These one issue voters only see two colors, black and white.

To them, not wanting our constitution rewritten to conform to their personal beliefs is the same an promoting abortion. In George Bush they have the perfect candidate for their simplistic view of the world. To them, nuance is a filthy French word and thinking is hard work.

6. I faced the same problem in my union..
We were heavily federally regulated (Railroad) and there was constantly legislation before congress effecting our jobs and safety. But these guys were one issue voters guns, abortion, the famous "flag burning". When I'd try to pound in there heads that the Democrats were the only thing standing between them and a total assault on there jobs and safety they would walk away. I'm retired now but your post brought back lots of bad memories.

7. My mother-in-law...
... will vote for any candidate who is pro-life and anti-gay. She's 82 years old and from the farm, very much old school. Her daughter (my wife) has given up and just lets Mom go on and on. Makes for some rollicking Sunday dinners, lemme tell ya.

8. Don't come back with the death penalty
There's a difference between killing potential children and killing brutal murderers. I don't want to get into a big discussion about this, but I know that's what they will say and it's not a terrible point. The point about the war is good though especially if they are Catholic because the Pope came out against the war.

10. You raise a good point
While I don't normally believe in the death penalty, there certainly is a difference between killing fetuses and dirty murdering bastards. I am against the death penalty, but do think that the dirty bastards should be kept in isolation for life and I have been called barbaric for this belief. This actually is another subject for another time so I'll leave it at that. And this guy isn't Catholic, he's fundie, more or less.

11. Those 3 are wastes of life.
And after Nov 2, there will be no need for them. Tell them to Fuck Off! In this struggle , you are with us or against us, and they are against us.
