No Wonder Wisconsin is Turning to the Right - Massive Mind-F***ing
Edited on Mon Oct-11-04 09:38 AM by trailrunners
On Friday night, I drove through northern Wisconsin from Superior through Wausau/Stevens Point and on to Neenah in the Fox Cities to visit my sister-in-law. Just for kicks, we (my wife and 3 young children) decided we would count all the signs we saw for Kerry and Bush - just to see who would win (the yard sign battle). I feared that I may count more Bush signs, especially in the rural areas. Fortunately, Superior gave Kerry a big lead I hoped he could hold through the rural areas. It finally got dark near Wausau with Kerry holding a pretty sizable lead. We stopped counting and decided to resume on the way back home and count from Neenah to Wausau.

What was the most disturbing thing I discovered however, was the fact that I could not find a public radio station in north central wisconsin so I could listen to the debate. All I found in the range where public radio stations usually are, were right-wing religious radio stations. :puke: There were like 5 or 6 religious radio stations, and I could not find one public radio station to listen to the debate on (I did finally find a station and found that Bush sounded like a moron on the radio too). It was amazing, and even though I'm Catholic, I was disgusted by it. Seems that there is a massive mind-f*** going on in north central Wisconsin by the religious right. Scary :scared: :grr:

Back to the sign counting contest.

My sister-in-law's husband is a pretty solid Republican (as well as my sister-in-law most likely), but doesn't really care for Bush. I'm not sure I could convince him to vote for Kerry, but I'm not sure he's voting for Bush either. However, their neighborhood on the island in Neenah was covered with Bush signs. There were a few brave Kerry supporters, but Bush signs were everywhere. By the time we got out of Neenah, Bush had pulled even with Kerry in the sign battle. Stevens Point helped Kerry a little and things remained even until we pulled into Wausau. Kerry was able to eke out a 1 sign win over Bush on our drive from Superior to Neenah and back. :toast: :headbang:

3. Yeah, I Figured as much...
Yeah, I was figuring (hoping) that was the case. I was thinking that the Fox Cities area was probably a repug stonghold. Still a bummer though.....

2. Just north of Milwaukee, there are a buttload of idiots.
There are a lot of huge B/C signs in the West Bend/Cedarburg area. Almost zero K/E. To the west as far as the eye can see, I have the only K/E signs I know of. Very discouraging.

The good news is, on a quick trip to Kenosha over the weekend, I was pleasantly surprised to find a large majority of K/E signage.

4. That's what we have here in Chicago/metro area!
It's ALL and I do mean ALL right-wing radio...either 'talk *cough* new' or Christian (Evangelical)! Even the NPR has a RW slant!

Just about the only time you can get a break is to tune in to music.

5. Here's a listing of WPR Ideas Network stations:
Ideas Network Webcasting (WEB) - The World!
KUWS (FM) - Superior
W215AQ (FM) 90.9 - West Madison, Middleton
W275AF (FM) 102.9 - Ashland, Bayfield
WHA (AM) 970 - Madison
WHAD (FM) 90.7 - Delafield, Milwaukee
WHBM (FM) 90.3 - Park Falls
WHDI (FM) 91.9 - Sister Bay, Door County
WHHI (FM) 91.3 - Highland, Dodgeville
WHID (FM) 88.1 - Green Bay
WHLA (FM) 90.3 - La Crosse
WHWC (FM) 88.3 - Menomonie, Eau Claire
WLBL (AM) 930 - Auburndale, Stevens Point
WLBL (FM) 91.9 - Wausau
WLFM (FM) 91.1 - Appleton
WRFW (FM) 88.7 - River Falls
WRST (FM) 90.3 - Oshkosh
WSHS (FM) 91.7 - Sheboygan

You should have been able to get the Ideas net on Superior, then Park Falls, then Wausau.

Also there's WOJB, a public radio station at Reserve on the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Indian reservation (near Hayward) that's not part of WPR. They carry a lot of Pacifica programming as well as local & Indian network stuff (Native American News, etc.).

I drive around in northwestern WI from Black River Falls to Superior & all points in between all the time I'd be insane without WPR (& sometimes Minnesota PR).

They also have a separate News & Music network.

6. Campaign signs for Kerry haven't been available until recently...
...unless you ordered them yourself.

I stopped in Green Bay last week, hoping the yard signs had finally come in. They told me the signs wouldn't be available until Friday. I think this is a mistake made by the national campaign. Perhaps the idea was that Kerry signs would pop up instantaneously after the debates. But geez, if you can't even get them to the people on time, what kind of message does that send???

I've been giving people "window signs" that they can put on a stake in their yard - but they ain't weather-proof. Bumperstickers and pins are popular, too...but nothing makes an impact better than yard signs.

7. MPR has stations all over Minnesota
Edited on Mon Oct-11-04 10:01 AM by RatTerrier
In Duluth/Superior:

http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/stations/wscnwscd/

WSCN 100.5 FM NEWS (most likely for debate)
WSCD 92.9 FM MUSIC

Both have pretty powerful signals that go for miles. Note that they are not in the traditional public part of the dial.

Many AM stations aired the debates as well, and at night, you could probably pull in a stronger station like WBBM (780) in Chicago or WCCO (830) in Minneapolis. WHA in Madison has a pretty strong signal as well.

8. Wausau had 70% of the Kerry signs stolen last week
Bush was here last Thursday, before he came the republicans stole 70% of the Kerry signs. Including the large banner that was hanging by cables on the Dem headquarters. They stole what ever they could get their hands on, size and location didn't seem to matter.

We've been working hard to replace them.
