Voter Triggers Dean's Much-Talked About Temper
Sun January 11, 2004 05:30 PM ET

By Patricia Wilson
OELWEIN, Iowa (Reuters) - Dale Ungerer, a 66-year-old retiree from Hawkeye, Iowa, succeeded on Sunday where eight Democratic presidential hopefuls have failed -- he made front-runner Howard Dean show a flash of his much-discussed temper.

The former Vermont governor had just finished his standard stump speech blasting President Bush for, among other things, his Iraq policy and his stewardship of the economy. He asked, as is his custom, for "questions, comments or rude remarks in the New England tradition."

Ungerer, wearing a T-shirt bearing the words "Mr Fix It," rose to his feet and condemned what he called the incivility of the campaign and the political press. He suggested Dean and the other Democratic candidates stop "tearing down your neighbor" and cut their "slam, bam and bash Bush" rhetoric.

"Please tone down the garbage, the mean-mouthing of tearing down your neighbor and being so pompous," Ungerer, a registered Republican who voted for Bush in 2000, said to scattered hisses and boos from the overwhelmingly pro-Dean audience at the Oelwein Community Center.

1. How is that anger?

Man, what a crock of shit this article is.

Just another attempt to "Gore" Dean..

Yeah, telling someone who is clearly out of line to sit down because they have had their say is "anger?" .....

I hate the media in this country.

"angry man not ready for WH" is the meme.

The media in this country is completely bought off and fucked up.

2. Jay-sus!

"George Bush has done more to harm this county right here with unfunded mandates, standing up for corporations who take over the farmers' land, making it impossible for middle class people to make a real living, sending our kids to Iraq without telling us the truth first about why they went," Dean said.

"It's not the time to put up any of this 'love thy neighbor' stuff ... I love my neighbor, but I'll tell you I want THAT neighbor back in Crawford, Texas where he belongs."

My gawd. I love that man. Time for another big donation.

To paraphrase Sam Gamgee, "Some things are worth getting angry about." Good for you Howard Dean. The more Dems kick ass, the better for ALL of 'em.

For the record: Clark supporter.

Is showing anger. If you are not angry you are not paying attention. Dean is paying very close attention.

The truth really is heresy to Wing-nuts.

11. Typical of the political press
Everything is a game to them, and they like nothing better than to take any incident and use it for "gotcha". They wouldn't understand anger because nothing about politics means anything to them enough to ever get angry. It's just a game to them and to us it's our future.

12. We NEED an angry Democrat!
We have important issues, and we have every right to be angry about a number of policies (and other matters).

I could become a very big Dean fan...

Fox News has been showing this clip over and over. Dean's face gets bright red during his tirade. Pretty funny, actually.

Reply 6 - Posted by: Anner40, 1/11/2004 6:43:14 PM

I don't care that he is running for George's job - this man should not be showing such disrespect to the President. Thank the Lord he is not George's neighbor - good ole Barb would give him such a slap.

Reply 9 - Posted by: eightiron, 1/11/2004 6:48:58 PM

He seems to have some serious mental problems. He needs to see a doctor.

Reply 12 - Posted by: mimsy, 1/11/2004 6:50:17 PM

This Deanie-weenie gives me the big-time heebie-jeebies. Please tell me that no real majority of delegates would put him at the Dim nominee...

Reply 16 - Posted by: Blue Moon, 1/11/2004 6:57:58 PM

I happened to turn on the TV right as FoxNews started running the clip for the first time. I flipped back and forth with CNN to see if they were covering it at all, but their big story was the O'Neill slap at Bush, what a surprise. Good for FOX for showing this and kudos to the "infiltrator" who got to ask his question! Dean's anger towards Bush comes across as irrational so you have to question his judgement overall. Do you want a guy with a hot temper with his finger on THE button? NO

Reply 20 - Posted by: TheTech, 1/11/2004 7:05:09 PM

A flash temper like Ho Ho has is symbolic of mental illness! Everyone has a right to get angry. That is a normal emotion. It is how you funnel the anger that determines state of mental health.

Ho Ho is mentally sick and needs help. He is a spoiled rich kid and can't stand it when someone sees through him by asking questions as simple as what this audience member asked.

Reply 21 - Posted by: Jackie, 1/11/2004 7:05:14 PM

ROFL..Just takes a damn good Republican from IA to ruffle that fraud's feathers....and an older one at that..... Good job.....

Reply 26 - Posted by: REKfan, 1/11/2004 7:11:27 PM

Dale Ungerer..Thanks. You da man. Howard is off his rocker as we all know and you exposed him. Good work.

*Reply 28 - Posted by: englishleigh, 1/11/2004 7:13:31 PM

There is something in Dean's eyes that is truly frightening. He looks unhinged in this video clip Fox is showing. Makes me wonder how he treats his wife if she dares disagree with him on anything.

Reply 33 - Posted by: Judith1, 1/11/2004 7:30:01 PM

When I saw the news clip(Iexpect it will be on foxnews several times yet tonight) I could not believe what it made me immediately think of.
Dean stood there pointing and wagging his finger and all I could think of was bj and his "I did not have sex. . . . . ." as he proceeded to lie on. I guess Dean has decided to lie on also.
Dean is a funny figure when he loses his temper.
Shades of bj.
Guess maybe the rest of the dwarves will have to have a bj moment to catch up with Dean.

Since Howard Mean thinks that Job is one of the books of the New Testament, why should one think that he's heard of the parable of the Good Samaratan?

Reply 49 - Posted by: mominNoCA, 1/11/2004 8:23:23 PM

Thumb shaped head

LOL! That describes his head perfectly!

Reply 53 - Posted by: Landshark, 1/11/2004 8:27:24 PM

Has anyone considered the source of dean's anger?

I suspect that a photo of his wife explains much.

*Reply 57 - Posted by: bean, 1/11/2004 8:35:03 PM

He is a closet wife beater. Why do you think she is so quiet?

Reply 73 - Posted by: anybodybuthil, 1/11/2004 9:09:24 PM

I can guarantee you that Dean has talked to every nurse he has ever worked with in the same manner. He's an arrogant POS.

Reply 76 - Posted by: avikingman, 1/11/2004 9:17:53 PM

I'm a New Englander. Dean is not. He's a snot-nosed Park Avenue flatlander from NY City. Vermont is full of these NYC transplants, and they and we are the worse for it at the moment.

Dean will burst like the thin skinned, gas filled balloon that he is.

Live Free Or Die!

Reply 78 - Posted by: osu mom, 1/11/2004 9:22:23 PM

Here's a scenario...Dean gets the nomination then has a melt down...guess who flies in on her broom.

Reply 81 - Posted by: Neocon, 1/11/2004 9:27:48 PM

I loved how Dean asked for opinionated questions, then furiously slapped the questioner down. The look on Dean's face was just maniacal before he tore into the guy.
And the crowd loved Dean's response! And they call Republicans Nazis!

Reply 82 - Posted by: rlwo, 1/11/2004 9:28:46 PM

Could need lithium, but best would be tegretol. We've already had one Democratic president on an anti-psychotic.

Reply 83 - Posted by: TheTech, 1/11/2004 9:36:01 PM

Dean Dean, He's their man!
If he can't beat Bush, they say, then nobody can!
Whenever he gives his three thumbs up, he thinks it looks cool!
Me thinks he has a stuck stool.
The press and his opponents now say he is mean and abrupt,
but this ususally only happens when someone tries to interrupt.
We all pray that he will win the nomination this summer.
For us LDotters, anything less is a bummer.
Howard Dean can claim he goes to church and pray during the mass,
But it won't stop the landslide in November when President Bush stomps on his ....!

Go "W"!

Thank you, Ho Ho, for running for President!

I wish I could think so fast on my feet. Says a lot about the man, doesn't it? Dean puts the heckler in his place and manages to whack bush and also make a point about what he stands for. Sounds to me like he hit a triple bank.

And why were the reporters trailing Ungerer? Since when is a heckler a newsworthy item after they've spoken?

18. wouldn't have been more effective of Dr Dean
had he refuted and/or invalidated what the detractor had to say ?

It has the same ultimate impact, guy goes away. It provides good press and ad possibilities, it demonstrates that he can effectively deliver a message in a dialog.

Insted all he got is another republican sound byte and the guy goes away victorious. Getting Dr Dean's fur up was the point of this after all and he did it.

How can ANYONE say they won't vote for Dean? The sincerity of that remark is wholly becoming and obvious.

If asked that question by this Republiclown, who here would not have responded exactly the same way that Dean did?

"Bush is not my neighbor."

Dean is the real deal.
