Kerry should propose a fourth debate on a subject of Bush's choosing
Edited on Mon Oct-11-04 03:22 PM by Onlooker
Bush needs to prove to the American people that he can be convincing. His ability to persuade is a basic test of his competence to be president. His inability to explain why his vision is better than someone else's may explain why he's failed so miserably in foreign affairs. He can't convince anyone that he's right. Foreign leaders simply don't respond to his whines and smirks and don't have sympathy for all his "hard work." I think Kerry should be generous on this issue and propose at the next debate a fourth debate on either foreign policy or domestic issues, whichever Bush chooses.

2. Bush ran out of things to say after the first 5 minutes of the
first debate! I guess he could stand there and get that "My Pet Goat" look on his face for 90 minutes.

5. nice idea, BUT...
If Kerry proposes a fourth debate, it could easily be spun that he's the one who's behind and desperate. "Kerry wants another chance at Bush. Kerry not satisfied with debate performances." That sort of thing.

If Bush does just as badly in the third as in the first--so bad that even Fox has to concede victory to Kerry--then proposing a fourth debate wouldn't be as easy to spin as what I wrote above, but then the biggest problem is that Kerry is cultivating an image as the mature, staid Statesman--Bush is the one who goes around saying, "Lemme at 'em!"

Kerry should do everything he can to make the third one count (which basically entails staying out of Bush's implosion). Maybe Bush will do so badly that he'll beg for a do-over, which Kerry can politely decline....
