Is CMB the 1st woman to ever run for president?
I know Ferraro was VP candidate in 1984 but did she ever run for prez later?

Is Moseley-Braun the 1st female candidate?

Thanks

3. Heavens, no! That would be The Honorable Shirley Chisholm!
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 02:06 AM by VolcanoJen
In 1968, Chisholm was the first woman of color to be elected to the U.S. Congress, and only after the courts ordered a remandering of the New York Congressional Districts. She beat TWO MEN on her road to Capitol Hill! In 1972, she became the first woman to ever run for President.

I continue to adore her. :-)

6. She was awesome and eaten by the left just like CMB
They tried to make her answer a question of whether she was a woman first or black first.

It was awful.

She went to the convention with a good chunk of delegates no watter what they pulled on her.

8. My mother made certain I knew who Shirley Chisholm was.
I was just a kid, in second grade by then, and my mom would sit me down and tell me how inspiring and important it was that a woman had decided to run for President. We were just this normal, average, suburban white family from Ohio, but my mom was so inspired by Ms. Chisholm, and made sure that I understood, at that tender age, the significance of what she was achieving.

We've come a long way, baby... but not long enough.

7. I remember.
I was nine at the time and I was really rooting for her. Also Pat Schroder ran several years ago, and Liz Dole did recently although pretty halfheartedly.

Please, please, please share your story of caucusing for Chisholm! That must have been interesting!!!

In fact, being an Iowa Dem, you must have all kinds of great caucus stories to share with us... don't be shy! We're all quite jealous that you guys always get to go first. :P

5. Former Colorado Congresswoman Pat Schroeder
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 02:09 AM by depakote_kid
ran in 1988 and New York Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm ran in 1972. neither one made any more inroads than Mosley-Braun, and Shroeder in particular took a tough beating in the mainstream press. Unfortunately, the only way a woman will have a shot at the presidency any time soon is if she runs as a Republican- Hillary Clinton notwithstanding.

10. Going after that anti-suffragette vote
It'd be really dumb if the Republicans ran a woman and won.

Everyone's talking about running Hillary -- well chances are she's not going to run. We are going to win in 2004 and in 2012 Hillary's problably not going to be in good shape to run.

In 2016 Chelsea Clinton will be 36. We all know people have been talking about how she should be president someday...

13. Hillary has extremely high negatives
which, even though they're undeserved, will be hard to overcome in a general election. That's unfortunate, because I think she'd make a much better president than her husband was.

It's just my opinion, but it seems to me that only a Margaret Thatcher style politician has a shot at the presidency any time soon in this backward ass country....

14. Why do you assume Hillary won't be in good shape to run in 2012?

She'll be 65-66, I think, and we've had plenty of presidents that old. Woman usually live longer, too. Of course some people die fairly young but others go strong up into their eighties.

20. Not necessarily physically, but realistically as well
The Republicans will be ready to smack down whoever comes after 8 years of our guy from this year -- and Hillary is a gold mine of rightwing hatred.

9. Didn't Patsy Mink run in 1972?
I'm pretty sure that she made a bid for either the presidency or vice presidency that year.

11. You're all wrong!!! 1st woman to run for pres (on a major party ticket)
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 02:24 AM by Rowdyboy
Margaret Chase Smith-Republican-Maine

1st woman to have her name placed in competition for a major party nomination in 1964. She was a class act.

18. Not to mention Susan B. Anthony. At least

I think it was Susan B. Anthony who ran for president back before women could vote. Of course she really had no chance.

Sadly, it never seems to get much better for women, though. I remember poll workers joking with voters about whether they were "going to vote for Shirley" in 1968. I don't mean reports of this, I mean I heard it myself. I was furious.

16. I specified "major party nomination"
Woodhull ran on a minor party if I remember correctly. I promise, I didn't forget her, but Senator Smith was the first to run as a major party candidate.
