Ky-Sen: Bunning is losing his mind

Tue Oct 12th, 2004 at 03:54:45 GMT

Big rumor making the rounds in Kentucky -- Republican Sen. Bunning is increasingly ill and unable to carry out the duties of his office. As soon as he is reelected (assuming he is reelected), he will resign office, and KY's unpopular Republican governor, Ernie Fletcher, will appoint himself to the seat.

Salon examines the evidence in support of the rumor:

"This apparent fear of the spontaneous has spurred rumors in Kentucky that Bunning, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, is suffering from some sort of dementia, perhaps Alzheimer's. Bunning has declined to release his medical records. But until now, there was nothing hard to suggest that the one-term Republican senator was anything but a crotchety, occasionally confused, or arrogant old man.

On Monday, however, Bunning -- who turns 73 this month -- abruptly retreated behind yet another barrier, in an action so inexplicable that it appears likely to bring the rumors about his health, now referred to obliquely in Kentucky news reports, into open discussion. It may also mark a turning point in a race that, against all expectations, has been tightening recently."

13. He desperately needs help
I added Mongiardo's link to my sig over a week ago... Bunning has 4 million dollars and as little as a week ago Dr. Dan only had 600K.

Please, help him if you can! I've had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Mongiardo at a local mine union march and he's a great guy.

5. Aah, what the fuck; it worked for Happy Chandler
Damn place isn't even a state.

(It's a commonwealth.)

Lincoln said it best: as Kentucky goes, so goes the Union. Hey, he should know, he was born there.

7. The old fire-baller.
If the rumors of Jim Bunning's dementia are true, I am sorry he is suffering, as he thrilled so many of us when we were kids when he pitched for the Phillies.

I wish Kentuckians would reject a healthy Senator Bunning, not a suffering one, on the grounds that he's a rubber stamp for Bush's agenda, if not way more conservative. I'd like to see him healthy and then rejected by Kentucky voters on those grounds.

Does anyone know if McAulliff is now helping in this race? Send the Democratic Senate campaign in Kentucky some bucks, Terry.

8. the DSCC is already helping!
The DSCC raised a record $17.6 million in the 3rd quarter, $1.1 million of that online. $11.2 million of that was raised in September alone.
The NRSC raised $15.3 million in the quarter, and has a 2-1 edge in cash-on-hand.

But with over $8 million cash on hand, the DSCC has the cash to expand the playing field, and it is doing so targetting the Kentucky Senate race. A DSCC poll released last week showed a tightening race:

<snip>

State Sen. Daniel Mongiardo is getting a boost from a national Democratic campaign committee, which has infused his campaign with cash three weeks before the election.
The Washington-based Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee transferred "tens of thousands" of dollars to Mongiardo's election fund, campaign manager Kim Geveden confirmed on Friday.
