"Change is in the air"
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 01:27 AM by PCIntern
I shall never forget Dan Rather's opening of his broadcast 6:30 PM EST on Election Day in 1992. He obviously wasn't allowed to say anything until the polls closed but he could not help himself but to give a clue to the masses.

I look forward to hearing the equivalent on Election Night 2004.

I believe that Bush and Karen Hughes and Rove know they're trailing badly. This is my reasoning:

1. Bush has that anger which is borne of complete and utter frustration. This is not the more ephemeral anger of oppositional politics but of personal destruction. Recall what happened in the schoolyard when the bully was surrounded by those he tormented or a couple of guys much bigger than he. The rage flowing at the moment of truth, the knowledge that the whole house fo cards was collapsing and there was no avoiding the entropy which would ensue. Shamed and violated before the entire student body, the phrase "Wanna get away?" is apropos of his position right now.

2. Interviews of Karen Hughes demonstrate her frustration with the campaign. It is not going her way - she probably had the best view of how to manage * and has been trumped by Rove. Rove is no genius, despite the media's, including the true liberal media (websites, The Nation, some others) attempts to portray him as such. To quote someone from the old Reagan days: when Teflon scratches, everything sticks to it. Rove studied Machiavelli's writings, Mein Kampf, the work of the Soviets, and other radical methods and applied them here. The fact that we have a complicit media, as we did duriong the McCarthy days, as we did during the early Watergate days (the young folk among us would be surprised at how the story languished until the CIA-connected Bob Woodward gave the story legs - don't think that the NYT was so heroic here - it was a Johnny-come-lately compared with some other papers. Their big coup was the Pentagon Papers and Sy Hersh) contributed to the delay in discovery, but Hughes knows that the genie is out of the bottle and there is no putting it back. Bush's surrogate mother-protector is well aware that her honey, no matter what happens on 11/2 has lost all credibility with the body politic. Even the Conservatives.

3. Which is extremely important because what may happen to the Repubs may be that which happened to the Conservative Party in Britain - utter dismemberment. The WSJ ran a fascinating op-ed piece some weeks ago written by a British Conservative party member who warned the Repubs that this was about to happen to them. The intellectual and political dishonesty is just a death-watch beetle in the soul of the Republican Party.

4. It increasingly looks, with the revelations in KY, that the Senate may be lost to the Repubs which would greatly invalidate any return to the WH of Bush. If an only if the Dems grow a pair they will be able to render him ineffectual and he will fade into a real obscurity as his impairment continues to increase in scope and his affect degenerates further.

5. For it is not only Jim Bunning, my personal hero as a Philadelphian who watched his perfect game on TV in 1964 that Sunday Afternoon of Father's Day, who is the only one in this election cycle who is not doing well mentally and emotionally. Ther is little doubt that our appointed President is fast decompensating. this is often seen in substance abusers as they approach their 60's. The long-term effect of the EtOH and drugs sets in and true deficiencies ensue. Anyone who saw the debate between Richards and Bush Jr. all those years ago knows exactly how far he's come.

6. Good luck to all of us in the home stretch and never ever give up until the last vote is counted and the last Supreme Court ruling is made.

8. Impressive.
I was in college when the Watergate scandal unfolded, & I found it riveting. Those were the days of good journalism; if today's media had the same standards, this administration would have been history by now. Too bad Bob Woodward isn't the same idealistic, hungry journalist; he seems to value money more these days.

I appreciate your opinions about the coWard-in-chief. I completely agree about his frustration; I think he knows he's out of there on Nov. 2. :)

And I have always been in anguish about Jim Bunning. He's a Phillie. He's on the dark side. I always have to split my feelings about him as an athlete and as a politician. Good to know that he is having problems in KY!!!!!

13. I'll tell you a dirty little secret:
Watergate would have died on the vine if the CIA hadn't been feeding Woodward info when he ran into a dead end. do recall that he was a former employee and we know all about 'former' employees. Ain't no sich animal.

The NYT had abasically ignored the story and the alternaitve press had almost given up the fight. Nixon was re-elected despite it by a landslide. Then it really began to unravel. The real story of Watergate can be found in the now out of print book Secret Agenda.

Woodward may have also had ties with the CIA. That's not talked about very much, though, not even by Bob Woodward.

28. Washington Post itself had CIA ties
Philip Graham, publisher of the Post, was pals during the 1950's with CIA types like Allen Dulles, Richard Helms, and Frank Wisner. Wisner and Graham were supposedly both part of Operation Mockingbird, a CIA program to infiltrate the media.

After Graham died in 1963, his wife Katherine hired Ben Bradlee to run the paper. Bradlee was a friend of CIA counterintelligence chief James Angleton, and his wife's sister Mary had been married until 1960 to another major CIA figure, Cord Meyer, Jr.

After their divorce, Mary Meyer had an affair with John Kennedy. She was shot mysteriously in 1964, and Bradlee and his wife said they had seen Angleton, who was the trustee for her children, breaking into her house to steal her diary describing the affair.

There are a lot of tinfoil theories surrounding these eventss -- and it has not even been officially admitted that Operation Mockingbird actually existed. But the friendships of both Graham and Bradlee with numerous CIA figures are undeniable.

29. I think Bush 1 was Deep throat
I think there was things that should not have been delved into, in Bush's mind, so he decided the ouster of Nixon would occupy the press enough to keep them off the real story. Not sure all the details of that story but had to do with JFK and power moves around the world.

30. an extraordinarily complex web
which not even Ludlum would write.

As I said, Secret Agenda (the book) had enormous info on Dean and his wife who was a former call girl who had been hooked up with all kinds of 'folks' as they call them these days.

When Nixon referred to the 'whole Bay of Pigs thing' in that conversation with Haldeman (I think) he was referring to the Kennedy Assassination.

It's all the same players generation after generation...and why not? They're running the world. They really are.

there are crossroads in civizations which occur every generation or so, when the old guard dies off and the memories are scant. I fyou talk to peopel in their 70's and 80's they'll tell you about McCarthyism and fear. We must expect the rumors, rears, and the madness of crowds. This is going to be a very difficult time in our country's history and we must be prepared to argue our case continuously and never give up on the mission.

We know the powers that be definitely won't stop.

20. I saw Carville on Today this morning,

and the Thug opposite him was whining about name-calling
and such, and Carville shot back with "what is this 'liberal'
crap, is that all you got?"

The thug was stunned that Katie gave JC the last word.

Then last night on Nightline a dem and a repug were giving
their views on the day, and the Thug wouldn't wait his
turn. He had to overtalk and interrupt.

There's just this tingling in the air that they know, no
matter how many times they repeat their mantra that their
boy is toast. You can see it.

31. Carville
Is usually refreshingly outspoken. If only more people had his penchant for "telling it like it is" but, alas, few do. Most have skeletons in their closets to worry over, career ambitions preclude them from speaking out... so they walk the eggshell walk.
