New meme saying that ABC favors Kerry....
Someone I know sent a message saying that "the news director at ABC told his people to ignore Karry's faults and concentrate on Bush's faults and to paint a negative picture of Bush."

Memo report is based on:

http://www.drudgereport.com/mh.htm

FRI OCT 08, 2004

<snip>
"The New York Times (Nagourney/Stevenson) and Howard Fineman on the web both make the same point today: the current Bush attacks on Kerry involve distortions and taking things out of context in a way that goes beyond what Kerry has done.

Kerry distorts, takes out of context, and mistakes all the time, but these are not central to his efforts to win.

We have a responsibility to hold both sides accountable to the public interest, but that doesn't mean we reflexively and artificially hold both sides "equally" accountable when the facts don't warrant that.

I'm sure many of you have this week felt the stepped up Bush efforts to complain about our coverage. This is all part of their efforts to get away with as much as possible with the stepped up, renewed efforts to win the election by destroying Senator Kerry at least partly through distortions."

2. I know
I got this thing - and I was wondering where the idea came from.

I think - if the memo is true - that it sounded pretty reasonable. Making the case that Bush* shouldn't get away with some of his smear tactics - that journalists should hold them accountable.

The Drudge distortion is assuming that Kerry makes equally ridiculous lies - while the ABC guy says that he does not.

3. Exactly -- the media shouldn't be in the business of "equalizing"
things that are not equal.

I was sensing that from other networks (I'm lookin' at you, CNN and MSNBC) -- when they "factcheck," they feel compelled to come up with an equal number of distortions from both sides, whether or not an equal number exists in fact.

So they come up with B* distortions one after another, and reach to make things up from the Kerry side. My favorite: Brian Williams asserting that Kerry was "flat wrong" in saying Chimp hasn't funded NCLB. "Flat wrong! Education funding has increased under this president, just not to the level required by the NCLB legislation." Well, helloooo, that's what Kerry SAID!!

News networks should be in the business of reporting the truth, period, whatever it is -- not redefining "balanced" to mean altering the facts to create a distortion of their own.
