Gas prices are acting like a tax....
A women at the Edwards event in Colorado just said that gas prices are acting like a tax.

Edwards answered with: when gas prices are up the money only goes into the pockets of big oil and the Suadi's.....Edwards said that the gas prices are essentially a 50 cent per gallon tax because of the war in Iraq....

1. Its so funny--in order to make high prices seem bad, call it a tax
Doesn't it play into rightwing ideology that a high price is just the way it is and a tax is always evil?

2. Well, I think gas prices should be double what they are now.
Like in Europe... That would make people think twice before they buy a fucking gas guzzling SUV!

3. If all the actual costs of motoring were all folded into
the price of gas, it would be $12/gal.

4. Have you been to the supermarket lately?
Yes, I agree with you about SUVs, but keep in mind that almost everything we buy in this country is delivered by trucks. My grocery bill has increased by about 30% to 40% since the price of gas went through the roof.

This is not a problem that can be fixed overnight since we have no mass-transit infrastructure, nor can we build one quickly. Nor do we have an alternate fuel program in place thanks to the political cretins who run things.

Basically, our failure to move away from gas consumption has raised the prices on everything and for the foreseeable future, we're all fucked.
