1. Only if they give him the same length of uninterrupted time as the
documentary takes, and allow him to fill it how he sees fit (say with Going Upriver or something of the sort).

4. Yeah three uninterrupted hours...that might make it worth it.
Just think of all the things Kerry could do in three hours.

8. I agree with that.
Same amount of time and able to run anything of his choosing, including a showing of F9/11.

Actually, that might be a trap too, since what Sinclair is broadcasting isn't coming officially from Bush, but any response from Kerry would be coming officially from Kerry. So on second thought, no I don't think he should take them up on anything.

3. Absolutely NOT!
By appearing, even to refute, he would be giving credibility to the smears. Since it is beneath contempt, Kerry should never personally respond. Other Democrats should do the necessary job on Sinclair.

6. Agreed. Even when we were urging Kerry respond to the SwiftVet smears...
We never wanted Kerry HIMSELF to respond. We wanted his surrogates to respond, forcefully.

This is a different situation. SwiftVets would have needed no response
had the media not picked up and ran with it, over and over.

A direct preemptive, or in-kind response to the Sinclair broadcast would lend credence
to a smear attack that HAS NOT AIRED YET.

Forget about Sinclair. It's Kerry's job to preempt this in a different fashion: by arranging for "Going Up River" to be broadcast on a COMPETING NETWORK -- A DAY OR TWO IN ADVANCE OF SINCLAIR.

Using the same methods Sinclair and Rove are using to get this smear broadcast. What's good for the goose is good for the gander -- everyone knows that.

5. How about OTHER
Send Michael Moore in to talk for 90 minutes. That ought to make the Sinclair execs choke on their own spit.

10. Hard to say.. sounds interesting
Unfortunately, no publicity is bad publicity and I'm sure Sinclair
would relish the chance to have someone "interview" Moore.

Why not ACCEPT theequal time, and use it to broadcast "Going Up River"?

Wouldn't that neutralize the controversy -- ESPECIALLY if Kerry inked a deal right now to defuse the situation and prevent Dems from manufacturing publicity for the opposition in their zeal to commit hara-kiri over this issue? The whole thing would be old-hat by the time both movies aired, back to back. Or give affiliates a choice of which one to show.

Continuing this controversy is stupid. Another day or so of this hysterical nonsense,
and DUers will simply ensure that this becomes a hot news item.
Which means the whole thing will air for sure, and get high ratings to boot.

Strike a deal and get "Going Upriver" -- NOT F-911, Moore is NOT an
acceptable antidote to the Vietnam smears -- on TV. This could be a
blessing in disguise, could it not?

12. Absolutely agree.
It just came out. It is also"news" by the VP's definition. Its not "our" fault it was just now released and it might be negative to Bush!

13. ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The "OFFER" is to have KERRY participate in a "panel" AFTER the film. Hmmmm... Kerry shouldn't give these vile fuckheads the time of day! Kerry doesn't owe them anything.. and should not even diginify that offer with any type of comment.

They want to run that smear piece and then have him DEBATE it? Fuck that. Kerry doesn't have to debate ANYTHING.

Sinclair, perhaps, can use the time to discuss amongst themselves why their advertisers are pulling their ads, and WHY their stock is plunging into the toilet.

14. Then Sen. Kerry would get TWICE the exposure.
Remember, all publicity is good publicity. Most people know the documentary's bogus. Bam! Then he gets to tell HIS side, uninterrupted. Bam! Bam!

The message: "When I volunteered for duty in Vietnam, I went to protect our nation. When I was there, I discovered the war was not what our nation's leaders made it out to be. When I got home, I did all I could to stop the war -- and protect the lives of Americans."

Idiot freepers may note that ending the war also stopped killing innocent Vietnamese.

15. Calling Sinclair's bluff
http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/index.html

The filmmaker behind the new pro-John Kerry documentary plans to offer it to Sinclair Broadcasting-- free of charge -- to see if the company is interested in showing its viewers a balanced presentation of the candidate. The challenge comes in the wake of Sinclair's extraordinary decision to force its 62 stations nationwide, just days before the presidential election, to air "Stolen Honor," which attacks Kerry's anti-war activities from the early 1970s, and which the Kerry campaign has labeled a smear film.

"Sinclair's using public airwaves to broadcast, at a politically sensitive time, an anti-Kerry message," says Paul Alexander, director of the critically-acclaimed "Brothers in Arms" film, which examines Kerry's experience in Vietnam, and casts him in a favorable light. "My argument is if they're going to air 'Stolen Honor' then they should run my film, and preferably in the hour right after it. I'm sending them a letter tomorrow demanding that." Earlier this week as the controversy brewed, a Sinclair spokesman told the New York Times the company would consider running a Kerry documentary from a different perspective. Alexander's offer may effectively, and publicly, call Sinclair's bluff.

"If they're going to air an anti-Kerry documentary, it's my opinion that under the equal time rule they're required to air the same amount of time" showing the other side, he adds, referring to the broadcast regulation that forbids stations from giving significant airtime to one candidate but not his or her opponent. The filmmaker says several television outlets have approached him about airing his film, "Brothers in Arms," but backed away when faced with the equal time restraint, which might force them to air a film about Bush. "But suddenly on the other side it's okay," to ignore the obligation for balance, asks Alexander.

Executives at conservative Sinclair, who made headlines last spring when they ordered their eight ABC stations not to run "Nightline" when the news show read the names of the fallen U.S. soldiers in Iraq, claim "Stolen Honor" is a news program and therefore does not fall under any equal time requirement. Alexander, noting "Stolen Honor" is widely available in DVD form to anyone who wants to purchase it, insists the film does not constitute news. He says he's also willing to offer his movie for free and to cut it down to match the exact the time length of "Stolen Honor." "I'll do whatever it takes," he says. Adding, "If they don't air it, then their intention with "Stolen Honor" is clear; it's a political move to assassinate the character of John Kerry."
