Supreme Court "October Surprise" Announcement - 10 Commandments & Debate
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 04:34 PM by emulatorloo
CNN writes:

<snip>

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court said Tuesday it will take up the constitutionality of Ten Commandments displays on government land and buildings, a surprise announcement that puts justices in the middle of a politically sensitive issue.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/10/12/scotus.roundup.ap.ap/index.html

The element of "surprise" according to CNN, the month of October, and the proximity of this to the final debate put me in a mood for conspiracy, given my hunch that Bush's main strategy tomorrow night will be to use wedge issues (abortion, God, gays) against Kerry. Now Bush's got the 10 Commandments as well to distract from the real issues.

Or am I nuts?

ON EDIT: grammar and clarify

1. Not gonna happen! They won't hear arguments until 2005.
They said they would hear the case! That means they will put it on their agenda. I heard earlier on CNN that "they won't hear arguments until at least after January 2005.

5. But the issue is in the news so it is open to discussion
I think, though, that it would have to be something the moderator would need to bring up for it to be a topic in the debate and I rather doubt it will come up as much as the Bush camp would like it too.

2. Nah. Rehnquist is a super sleaze.
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 04:36 PM by aquart
What I want to know is where his votes are coming from. Four to hear an argument: Rehnquist, Scalia, Thomas......who else on the court wants to talk about this? Is Kennedy a Catholic? Because he might want to ask WHICH ten commandments? Is this the one about graven images?

Who sold out his country to give Rehnquist the fourth vote?

6. Is anybody surprised that Sinclair would do this?
This is an outrage, not a surprise.

And horribly likely to backfire. THIS is the best they can come up with?

Oh, Karl, how far you have fallen.

7. Kerry needs to stand up strong for our Democratic values...
He gave a couple of wussy answers in the last debate, and while that's alright in a town hall setting, in this debate he needs to be clearly behind what's right.

9. Kerry's response should be
"I'm not on the Supreme Court. I will leave it up to the wisdom of the judiciary to decide this matter on its legal and Constitutional merits, both now and after I have been sworn in as President."

10. What about Buddha?
Why don't any government buildings have displays for the Noble Truths of the Buddha? Or a giant statue of Ganesh?

Religious displays on public property wouldn't be such a big deal if there was a REAL freedom of religion and diversity displayed.

At the very least, build a statue of our King, Sun Yung Moon.

12. This decision is not....
supposed to come down until summer 2005 according to NPR. I am not going to get my knickers in a knot. More concerned about the film, vote fraud and getting all my disenchanted, whining, freaking out demo friends to the poll in 2 weeks...lol..

Never let them see you sweat...
