January 12, 2004 LA Times
With Race the Issue, Dean's Again a Target

<snip>
"My attitude is if you join the Army, yes, it should give you an absolute path to earned legalization or citizenship," he said. But he cautioned that he did not want the all-volunteer armed forces to become "the haven for people who are struggling to get by because they happen to be Hispanic."
<snip>

4th paragraph from the bottom

In Iowa, Dean Is Again Target

<snip>
Dean said the "biggest challenge" facing minorities "is to help white audiences understand the plight of minority populations when it comes to race."

2nd paragraph, 2nd sentence

1. The point being?
The first is a misquote. Dean was very clear in that he didn't want people signing up for citizenship and then being sent to Iraq.

The second is true. Us pale people control most of the wealth in this country. We have to understand the problem to do anything about it.

2. It sounds like he's concerned about the number of hispanics in the army

5. Why doesn't Clark oppose "Don't ask, don't tell"?
Because Dean is a racist on the scale of Rush's great grandfather. Old!

4. That's because it's a misquote.
I could dig up the actual transcript but I'm to lazy.

9. The LA Times has readers to answer to.
I couldn't find a transcript yet.

One moderator did speak up in defense of Puerto Rican Americans who were already citizens serving. I don't know which candidate it was in response to.

10. It's quite clear
That he's concerned about latinos having so few options that their best hope for becoming US citizens is to become cannon fodder in Iraq.

11. Exactly. What a bull
shit non-story. He is saying he doesn't want a permanent class of immigrant cannon fodder in the army. Its a great point and the other candidates should know that. I like Kerry, but it was great that the moderator cut off what was about to be an obvious attack/pander.

12. Why did you leave out the rest of his quote?
You know, the part where he said he was concerned that desperate hispanic young people would volunteer to go to Iraq just to get citizenship? He's right. The last thing we want is for hispanics to have to choose between deportation and possible death in Iraq.

13. Also, if Dean knew a bit more about minorities or the armed forces
he'd realize that Hispanics are actually under represented in the U.S. armed forces. African Americans and poor folks in general that are heavily overrepresented in the U.S. military, but there's a dearth of Hispanics.

More evidence of Dean sticking his foot in his mouth in talking issues that he know little about. And in this case, the 2 most glaring ones of the campaign--national security and race.

14. Who was calling for proportional representation?
He expressed a legitimate fear that hispanic immigrants would be faced with the decision to have a shitty job unitl the government decided they couldn't live here anymore, or go into the military whether they were suited for it or not. They was no foot near anyone's mouth on this issue in the debate. One shouldn't have to serve in the military to get citizenship....if you think so, I hope you're ready to sign up just about everyone on this board.
