Please fact-check my LTTE |
|
The prose kind of rots, but I can't work on it any more tonight. I'm more interested in whether I got the facts moreless straight, and if there are any further outrages I should note. TIA, see you tomorrow.
=== Nevada: a former worker for a private voter registration company, Voters Outreach of America, alleges that the forms for newly registered Democrats were destroyed rather than processed. He retrieved several damaged registration forms and confirmed with the Clark County registrar that these voters were never registered. Voters Outreach of America gets most of its income from the Republican National Committee.
Ohio: the Secretary of State decided to enforce a little-known law mandating that voter registration forms be on 80-pound paper. This happened months after voter registration forms had been printed in newspapers. Forms were even available on state government web sites, where citizens were invited to print out and use their own copies. Of course, 80-pound paper would not pass comfortably through the ink-cartridge printers most computer-using private citizens would be expected to have.
Michigan: a Republican state representative was quoted in the Detroit Free Press as saying, "If we do not suppress the Detroit vote, we're going to have a tough time in this election."
Florida: the authorities tried to get away with a tactic that would have disenfranchised 48,000 potential voters because their names matched, or resembled, those of convicted felons. In theory, people whose names are being deleted will be informed, but since the master list is being kept in secrecy, it will be hard to verify whether a good-faith effort is being made to administer the laws fairly.

2. Just a couple of changes |
|
Drop this (or reword - something like 80-lb paper is not common): "Of course, 80-pound paper would not pass comfortably through the ink-cartridge printers most computer-using private citizens would be expected to have."
Michigan: mention the state rep specifically (don't recall his name)
Florida: mention that almost half the voters stripped were (black - use the term you're comfortable with), and virtually none were hispanic
If you have the room, you might also mention that activists in heavily black neighborhoods were visited by Florida Dept of Law Enforcement personnel (eg cops).

3. I would do the following |
|
Ohio: The Republican Secretary of state
Florida: OK but also add OR substitute that Glenda Hood wanted to disallow registration forms that were in blue not black pen and also wants to disallow registrations where citizenship is NOT checked off in a box even though the affidavit at the bottom that the voter SIGNS is a declaration of citizenship.
