Voter Registration Fraud Reported in Oregon!
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 01:37 AM by Roland99

Secretary of State Bill Bradbury and Attorney General Hardy Myers plan to investigate allegations that a paid canvasser might have destroyed voter registration forms.

"There have been allegations made that someone threw out some voter registration forms that had been submitted to them," Bradbury told The Associated Press late Tuesday. "This is a violation of the law and I will meet with the attorney general in the morning to talk about what we can do to pursue this, and to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Bradbury learned of the conduct from KGW-TV, which interviewed Mike Johnson, 20, a canvasser who said he was instructed to only accept Republican registration forms. He told the TV reporter that he "might" destroy forms turned in by Democrats.

"I have never in my five years as secretary of state ever seen an allegation like the one that came up tonight — ever," Bradbury said. "I mean, frankly, it just totally offends me that someone would take someone else's registration and throw it out."

1. It's happening in Nevada, too.
There's an article at the freepers that describes the same thing happening in Las Vegas -- RNC-hired canvassing companies that are destroying or disgarding new Dem registrations.

I bet it's nationwide.

But I hate Repugnants, so I might be biased.

5. Why are these all coming out the day registration closes?
Too late to fix it? Elections postponed? Democracy is fucked?

am I going to have to buy a gun?

The Convoluted Story On Voter Registration Fraud

Group Caught In Nevada Might Have Been Working Downtown Portland

By The One True b!X
(October 12, 2004 at 11:22 PM) --

It's already started to reverberate into the local Portland blogosphere. According to this story out of Las Vegas, an organization conducting voter registration around the country has apparently been caught in Nevada only processing registration forms for people registering as Republicans.

<Snip>

Problem is, there's another America Votes, and we're told by a source who works with that group that they are not the America Votes referred to by the article out of Las Vegas.

Initially, we assumed this opened up the possibility that the Las Vegas story might have been mistaken that the group engaging in illegal voter registration activities in Nevada was at work here in Oregon -- thinking that perhaps the reporter simply saw that there was an America Votes here in Oregon and that it must be the same people.

However, a report just aired on KGW's late-night newscast makes us rethink that take on it, and that the mysterious Voters Outreach of America might indeed have been active here.

According to KGW's report, they managed to corner a man conducting voter registration in Pioneer Courthouse Square today who was only accepting Republican registrations. In fact, the report said, he sometimes simply tosses Democratic registration cards in the trash. Why? Because he's getting paid $5 for every Republican registration, but nothing for Democratic registrations.

At the end of the KGW report, they stated that the man said he was from what he called the "traveling team" (no idea if that should be capitalized). They then referenced the story out of Las Vegas. Why? Because, they say, the man they cornered told them that his group had just recently been in Las Vegas.

So it seems that this group indeed may have been active here in Oregon after all. One thing that needs to be cleared up right away is whether or note Voters Outreach of America really does business as anything called America Votes. Why? Because, as we said, the America Votes that works here in Oregon is unaffiliated with the organization engaged in voter registration fraud, but the KGW report specifically used the name America Votes and never once referred to Voters Outreach of America.

9. Colorado too
I read about it happening in Colorado as well. Geez... Will every state become "a Florida" this year?

It's outrageous that we don't have a solid election system, especially after the 2000 election.

SCAM ALERT: Voter Registration

Sent: Thursday, September 16, 2004 3:29 PM
To: libs-or at webhost.osl.state.or.us
Subject: (LIBS-OR) SCAM ALERT: Voter Registration

Recently the Jackson County Library has been contacted by persons purporting to represent America Votes. Our director was contacted by a Harry Miller and asked to call an 800 number to give permission for America Votes to conduct a non-partisan voter registration project in our libraries.

I received a letter from Sproul and Associates,a consulting firm in Arizona, also saying they represented America Votes, with the same request.

I contacted the Kevin Looper, the Oregon State Coordinator for America Votes, to verify the information and received this reply from him:

"Here is what I know: We do not have a Harry Miller in our employ.
This organization is absolutely not representing America Votes, and my national leadership is initiating action to get them to cease and desist representations that infringe upon our rights and mislead voters.

Further, Sproul and Associates is a partisan political consulting firm based in Arizona that works for very conservative causes and has worked to oppose campaign finance reform. Their use of our name to cover their political leanings makes me question the overall intregrity of the voter registation that they seek to conduct. I will be forwarding this information to the Secretary of State's office for further investigation."

10. This group misrepresenting itself as America Votes
contacted libraries around Oregon. I subscribe to the Libs-Or email list for Oregon librarians and there were posts about this in mid September.
A fake America Votes person called Multnomah County Library(Portland), Jackson County Library(Medford/southern OR),Benton County Library(Corvallis, home of OSU) and Washington County Library(Portland's western suburbs and rural areas). He said that he represented America Votes and asked the libraries to call an 800 number to give permission for America Votes to do voter registration at their library. Jackson Co. also received a letter from Sproul & Associates, a consulting firm in AZ, asking the same thing. They contacted the OR America Votes office to verify the information and were told that the person didn't work for America Votes and that Sproul & Associates is a right-wing anti-campaign finance reform group and that the national America Votes organization were working on getting them to cease and desist. Both Multnomah County and Jackson County said that they reported this to the Secretary of State's offices.

16. Interesting...
Our entire election process is going to need to be revamped to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

Allowing same-day registration with proof of residency (picture ID with address, ie. Driver's License) or force people to register in person or allow it to be done online (but keep Deibold out of *that*)

11. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!!!
:grr:

I registered voters in Oregon recently and a few were listing themselves as Republicans....I can't even conceive for a moment to have considered throwing out these forms....As an American, I have a duty to make sure my fellow Americans have that chance to vote, and honor their decision, even if I don't agree with it....

These scum will stop at nothing...not that we have ever doubted it, but we are now starting to see what kind of things they are willing to do....I'm willing to put money on this as having been something that is wide spread across the country....

I'm raging like Bruce Banner over this bullshit... Republicans crawling deeper in the sewer on this one than ever before.
