I bet $1000 on a Kerry win today |
|
Yep, this obnoxious con kept claiming to me that Bush is going to win, so I finally said, "Wanna bet? Put up or shut up. $1000 bucks says your guy is toast!"
He gulped real hard and said, kind of meekly, okay. So the bet is on. It will do my heart good to take $1000 dollars off this guy. I can't wait. Because I KNOW Kerry is going to win. There is not a doubt about it in my mind.

1. I have about $500 in different bets |
|
riding on Kerry. My favorite bet though is my one friend who wants Kerry to win and will vote for kerry but really thinks bush is going to win, he says: "Well if Bush wins, I've made $100, which is about what the tax cut I got was, so I'll feel good. And if Kerry wins, I'll consider it money well spent, and I'll feel better"

I'm not lucky. It would be a whole lot safer if I bet on Bush to win. Better still, stay out of the whole thing.

7. Safe to bet on Bush? No way! |
|
He is going down. I feel it with every fiber of my being. (And I saw some non-public campaign polls over the weekend). Be optimistic - Kerry IS going to be your next president.

14. You picked the right candidate, but got lousy odds |

At offshore sportsbooks that $1000 could have been worth a $1600 profit, not even money. A couple of weeks ago Kerry was 2/1, meaning the $1000 could have been tripled to $3000 total.
Not that I was smart enough to jump on that 2/1. I'll wait until the final weekend and wager heavily on some individual states plus senate and gov races.

How are you going to determine who won? Have you chosen a polling company beforehand?

I'm thinking of going double or nothing in the case of a landslide, if only to collect another spit take when I suggest it to him.

21. Man-to-man bets are the best; suckers abound |
|
Gad, I would have loved a piece of that 7% action. Best election bet I've heard in quite a while. Bush was just slightly less than even money all year yet your co-worker decides to stack the deck against himself by forfeiting a full 7%. Amazing.
I take advantage of that type of outlandish claim all the time in Las Vegas sportsbooks. Last season some loudmouth bet me the Lakers would not lose two straight games all year. I beat him in the first week. A few months earlier a cocky kid who was betting huge on college basketball asserted Duke had only won two college basketball championships. When I told him he was out of his mind he pulled out $4000 and challenged me to match it and bet. Unfortunately, I got a little too loud and told him I'd throw in my Infiniti out in the parking lot along with my $4000 if he was correct. That caused the guy to reassess and wimpily walk out the door while we yelled insults at him. Duke won back-to-back in 1991 and 1992 and again in 2001.

positive but all of you are sound over-confident. Much like the Kerry campaign was sounding today. All of them came out talking abouthow Kerry was going to win the debates. Shouldn't they be lowering expectations?

Otherwise I'm hardly overconfident. In fact, DUers often cite the numbers I post as overly pessimistic. I do have a tendency to respond more to the giggly cheerleader threads with absurdly optimistic claims than I do to posts that underestimate our chances.
Bush is a slight favorite and that's probably legit, given the states he has locked up.
