Germany may back Kerry plan!!
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 07:26 AM by Skinner
Forgive me if this is a repost, but this article needs to be forced on every media outlet in America TOMORROW! This would be a great headline story in front of the debate.

http://news.ft.com/cms/s/907841fe-1cb5-11d9-8d72-00000e2511c8.html

Germany might deploy troops in Iraq if conditions there change, Peter Struck, the German defence minister, indicated yesterday in a gesture that appears to provide backing for John Kerry, the US Democratic presidential challenger.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Mr Struck departed from his government's resolve not to send troops to Iraq under any circumstances, saying:"At present I rule out the deployment of German troops in Iraq. In general, however, there is no one who can predict developments in Iraq in such a way that he could make such a binding statement ".

Mr Struck also welcomed Mr Kerry's proposal that, as president, he would convene an international conference on Iraq.

Germany would certainly attend, Mr Struck said. "This is a very sensible proposal. The situation in Iraq can only be cleared up when all those involved sit together at one table. Germany has taken on responsibilities in Iraq, including financial ones; this would naturally justify our involvement in such a conference."

1. A very bold move for Germany
A sign of how much strain Bush is putting on them. If they play smooth, this will give Kerry another bullet in the gun.

Thank God it wasn't France.

5. there goes that Republican sarcasm now
Oh, Kerry's plan is that he's going to have a summit... oops, it looks like the summit may actually work if a person that is viewed as more credible than Bush. Hey, isn't everybody more credible than Bush?

in fact, most members of the mold/spore/fungus world are far more credible and intelligent than Bush.

You mean politics may actually work? Geez, you would have thought GWB's edumacation would have taught him that.

Do remember though, germany can only be there for peace keeping - however it is great news that a country constitutionly not able to wage war would be offering to help iraq based upon an open "round table" discussion for what is best for the world.

14. This is great news
This can shoot down the rightwing talking point of "Germany and France said there is NO way they will get involved. What does John Kerry think he can do differently". Well, as we have known all along the simple fact that shrub is gone will cause many nations to join in and repair the damage our countries have suffered under this asshole.

19. I'm glad this quote was in the article...
"I know how these people think," Mr Bush told the audience in the second presidential debate last week. "I meet with them all the time . .. They're not going to follow an American president who says follow me into a mistake."

Dubya, ol' hoss...as usual you aren't accurately representing John Kerry.
JK won't be saying "follow me into a mistake".
He'll be asking "Please help us fix George Bush's mistake"...
and I have a strong feeling they'd come. All of them. Just to show you how wrong you were.

Chirac Commits France to Iraq Conference
HONG KONG - French President Jacques Chirac said Tuesday his country is "entirely committed" to taking part in an international conference on Iraq next month.

Chirac called on foreign ministers to work out the details and participants for the conference, which Iraqi leaders have recommended and U.S. officials support.

<snip>

In Paris, a French Foreign Ministry spokesman said France had not yet received an invitation for the conference.

21. Did the outcome of the election just become a big security issue....
in Kerry's favor? Not that it wasn't all along, but this news should provide a big slap in the face. We should make sure the Bush camp doesn't spin this somehow in their favor.

25. Germany steps forward to help elect Kerry; will other nations follow?
I have been waiting for something to break- fantastic, but why the HELL isn't it getting play in the media? Where is this story being carried? I HOPE Kerry BRINGS THIS UP tonight. Surely his campaign knows about this(?).

I suspect the WHITE HOUSE put the kabosh on this story... they've probably threatened all the major media outlets not to touch it. I don't see it on any news wires as of yet.

Please post links as this surfaces.

30. Some red faced Republicans today I bet.
"John Kerry's a traitor, consorting with oour 'enemies'!!!"
The Germans just made LIARS out of all of them.

Look for the French to come to the party next, making
the announcements before the election so John Kerry can
say "see, look, my plan will work."

:wow:

36. About time!
I've been wondering why European nations would state so strongly that they wouldn't go into Iraq even if Kerry was elected. They have to want to "help" get the chimp out of here for everyone's sake. This is just the reaction I had hoped for after the first debate. Now other European nations need to follow suit!
