Sen. John Kerry's debate performances gave him renewed support in Arizona, trimmed President Bush's once-commanding lead to 5 percentage points and returned the state to "battleground" status, a statewide poll asserted Tuesday.

Bush was favored over Kerry in the Nov. 2 election by 49 percent to 44 percent, according to the poll, conducted Thursday through Monday by the Social Research Laboratory at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Five percent were undecided and 1 percent chose Libertarian candidate Michael Badnarik.
