News about the situation at ASU, from the inside!
One of my former professors/colleagues teaches at ASU. I wrote to him to ask him how things were there because of the debate, and he told me that most of the faculty in his department aren't teaching this week (in fact, he's gone overseas). They've surrounded the concert hall with barbed wire ("God bless America", he said), and put snipers on top of every building (some concern about students with violin cases), and there's no place to park.

Unable to teach, huh? Well, I guess that goes along with the Bush administration's attitude towards education.

1. There's never been any place to park at ASU
but other than that, I expect its been a major disruption. I'm sure the students don't mind, when I taught there class attendence was not a high-priority.

2. Isn't ASU one of the top party schools?
I know that seeing thousands of coeds every day in summer dresses throughout the year would be very distracting even at my advanced age.

3. Used to be
Well, maybe it's still a party school, but they went after academic excellence a few years ago and have done pretty well.

Prof there just was awarded 2004 Nobel Prize in economics, if that gives you any idea.

Also home of Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Don Johanson's Institute of Human Origins.

But yeah, the year-round sunshine does promote a kind of vacation attitude!

6. Don Johnson's Institute
of Human Organs? Wait, I just reread it. Never mind.

That's what I first read when I had just glanced at your post.

4. Why couldn't they hold this at the UofA?
We're an older school with higher educational and admission standards. Not as many people as Phoenix to be sure but we'd pack the house. Besides, I got a major chem test today that I'm not ready for, sure could have used some of those cancelled classes. =)

5. I've got an even better "Inside"

All of ASU is connected by underground tunnels, you can walk upright between nearly every building totally unnoticed. The tunnels are full of steam, chill water, electric and communications cables.

You could move an army thru that maze. Not many people would know this. I spent a summer in those tunnels 20 years ago.

The network wasn't well documented when I was there, some of the tunnels are like 75 years old. I had to laugh about the razor wire. Bet them tunnels are filled with Chechen terrorists as we speak!

Edit: Wear respirators boys, I'm not tellin ya where the asbestos is down there. And PCB's and black widow spiders.

where everyone will be carrying violin, viola, cello, bass, trumpet, tuba, etc. cases!

There's going to be a lot of dead students!
:scared:

on edit: I was on campus yesterday, but I'm not going today!
Thankfully, my class for today was cancelled!

8. Violin cases!?!
OHMYGOD!!!!! RUN!!!!! :7

ASU is great! The biggest danger to * however is the on campus fraternity "I TAPPA KEG" whose notorious members can be seen most weekends running naked thru campus, urinating in the parking lots and trying to extract themselves from the palo verde trees.

We could lose him in a second.
