How many Iraqis have died in this war?
Last night when I was flipping channels, I saw Tweety taking a poll of the crowd. "Was the war the right thing to do?"
One girl said "Yes, it has saved so many Iraqi lives."

In my observation, I have seen estimates of between 15,000 and 20,000 Iraqis who have died in this war. What is the closest correct number?

I have no idea, but based on his past performance, how many Iraqis would have died if Saddam had stayed in power?

The American Bombs and the insurgents seem to be indiscriminate in who they kill. Are the Iraqi people better off without Saddam and with all the chaos in the region?

1. Edit: here's a link.

Edit with link: http://www.iraqbodycount.net/database/

Looks like between 13,000 and 15,000. My guess is that this is a pretty conservative figure.

Second edit: fixed link. Sorry about that.

5. Agreed. We similarly omitted military casualties in Desert Storm, though
estimates were 100,000+.

2. Closer to 50,000, and counting
There have been a few estimates. The best ones I've found are:

Civilians: 14,000

http://www.iraqbodycount.net/

Military: between 13,500 and 45,000, as of 5/28/03 (obviously many more now)

6. I don't know how it could be any less
what with all of the bombing and everything...

Seems like deaths caused from civil unrest and all would factor in as well.

7. Absolutely
Also left out are deaths from disease (mostly children) from unsanitary conditions.

3. The ones who die instantly are better off than those seized by US gunmen

and disappeared into "interrogation facilities" and "detention centers." They are also better off than those wounded horribly and denied medical attention, or who die long slow deaths from easily tretable diseases and starvation.

I suppose some Iraqi parents may be grateful, in a way, if their child was lucky enough to be vaporized.

9. How many would Saddam have killed?
I want to know how many total died because of war and how many would have died without a war.

I think the girl who said we saved so many lives by having a war is wrong. I'd like to know the numbers. I think other DUers might like to have some of these numbers to prove a point with freepers.

10. So civilians is between 4 and 6 times as many as died on 9/11
Innocent civilians going about their daily lives. 4-6x as many.

Not to mention that 30,000-100,000 soldiers who were "doing their duty" whether forced, coerced or true believers.

Not to mention the 1,080 US troops.

Terrorist slaughter < 3,000
Bush slaughter >> 46,080

Amount of authority we have over terroists = 0
Amount of authority we should have over the pResident = 100%

11. No connection
And there was no connection between Iraq and 9/11. None of those terrorists were Iraqi. Saddam had no connection. Finally after insinuating that there was a connection, the White House came out and said there wasn't and Cheney continued to say there was.

Do you know how many Iraqis were being tortured and killed by Saddam each year?
I think these are the people the student said we saved.
