CBS Producer Mary Mapes has been under attack by the RW for awhile now. Washington Whisperers are saying she will probably lose her job for the TANG CBS/Rather flap. Here is the article from the Buzz section of the "Washingtonian" laying out exactly what they are hearing. Also I've linked snips from Free Republic, World Net Daily and other sites and links showing how the RW has been after her head since the "Texas Dragging Death" which Bush still fumes about. These folks are after EVERYONE who disagrees with them. If Mapes goes down and 60 Minutes loses it's credibility as this Must Read article from "Washington Monthly" says then we might as well forget about it even if Kerry/Edwards win. Between Sinclair and this the TAKEOVER is almost complete. This is long: Please try to read it if you can...it's important. If you don't have time just read the first article it will give you some idea of what this is about. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Cronkite Laughs at Rather’s Expense, But It’s No Joke at CBSThey’re hauling everyone in,” says a magazine reporter who has talked to friends on 60 Minutes, the show that aired the flawed story.
“They” refers to the two men asked by CBS to investigate the document debacle: moderate Republican and former governor Dick Thornburgh, and former AP president Louis Boccardi.
If sources lose faith in 60 Minutes, perhaps the most venerable TV news program, whom will they trust? If Fitzgerald’s investigation erodes the bond of confidentiality between reporters and sources, will sources keep putting themselves in jeopardy to give reporters sensitive information?
It remains to be seen whether the Thornburgh-Boccardi investigation will help reestablish the integrity of CBS. It’s hard to see how the pair can get much more information than the detailed narratives already published in the Washington Post, USA Today, and other papers. The tale has been told about how Rather, together with CBS producers and news executives, allowed a fake document to get on the air—then refused to acknowledge their mistake until forced to come to viewers on bended knee.
After the investigation, there will be the inevitable sacrificing of several journalists. Bloggers are calling for Rather’s scalp, but producer Mary Mapes likely will take the first fall. But if Howell Raines could get pushed from the top editorial job at the New York Times, are anchor Dan Rather and news chief Andrew Heyward safe?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ARTICLE from: "Right Nation" about Mapes... Chain of connection is, however, quite relevant to the CBS scandal. Who forged the documents, and what was the chain of connection conveying the fake papers to CBS?
Further complicating matters for CBS and Dan Rather, the legacy media has unwittingly opened up another angle on probable malfeasance, when they proudly announced that Rather producer Mary Mapes had been the recipient of sensitive Abu Ghraib investigative documents and photos. Just as we are unsure of the actual source of the Guard memo forgeries, the same can be said for the source of the Abu Ghraib materials.
However, a partial chain of connection is revealed upon further examination of contemporary media accounts and the Taguba Report (the high level official inquiry) itself .
The publication of sensitive documents relating to the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib had all the marks of a well thought-out information warfare campaign. The legacy media’s focus was almost entirely on Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, rather than on the perpetrators themselves or their immediate commanders. Apparently, the instigators of the campaign and their liberal media cohorts thought that the American people would buy off on this disinformation, and would immediately call for Rumsfeld’s resignation, thereby damaging the credibility of the Bush Administration. As it turned out, the vast majority of Americans wanted Rummy to remain as SecDef, and the only people calling for his resignation were a few Democrat congressmen and left-leaning media pundits.
By her own apparent admission to the press, Mary Mapes was the recipient of these materials, but how did she get them? Ironically, a member of the new media suggests what some of the answers might be, and does this while promoting the imagined investigative prowess of one if its columnists. Barely a week prior to my original piece on the Abu Ghraib scandal, WorldNetDaily (WND) published an article about how retired Colonel David Hackworth, helped “expose the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal.” This sounds similar to Mary Mapes mysteriously “uncovering” photos and documents of the abuse. The WND piece reveals that Hackworth was apparently coordinating the transfer of these sensitive documents, in much the same way that many suspect Bill Burkett may have been the middleman for, if not the creator of, the phony Air National Guard memos. http://www.rightnation.us/forums/index.php?s=51412eeaac52d72e3d72d4e6ba4d9f92&showtopic=54654

CBS Producer Who Obtained Questionable Guard Documents Identified By Jeff Gannon Talon News September 13, 2004
WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- Mary Mapes, a Dallas-based producer for CBS, has been identified by Talon News sources as the person who obtained the documents that suggest President George W. Bush did not fulfill his National Guard obligations 30 years ago. The documents, which have been judged to be forgeries by many news services and forensics experts, are at the center of a scandal that threatens the credibility of the network.
Late Friday, CBS spokesperson Kelli Edwards confirmed to Talon News that it was Mapes that obtained the documents (view documents here), but refused to comment on the questions surrounding their authenticity. Mapes did not respond to Talon News requests for comment.
During Friday's network news broadcast, anchor Dan Rather defended the four pages he claims were written by Bush's superior officer at the Texas Air Guard, Lt. Colonel Jerry Killian. Rather talked with handwriting expert Marcel Matley who said that on the basis of his analysis of the signatures, he is pronouncing the documents to be authentic. Not all of the pages carry Killian's signature.
Two others were interviewed for the segment. Robert Strong, an administrative officer for the Texas Air Guard during the Vietnam era, who vouched for the documents. Author James Moore, a Bush antagonist, said,

Hawthorn pulled the chain out, showing it to jurors during cross examination of a police detective just a few hours into testimony Wednesday. In doing so, he stole a moment used to great dramatic effect by the prosecution in closing stages of the King and Brewer trials.
Berry's trial began as two pre-trial distractions came to an end.
First, State District Judge Joe Bob Golden denied a last-minute defense motion to move the trial from Jasper, about 125 miles northeast of Houston, because of intense media coverage and jury prejudice.
Later, CBS News agreed to provide a transcript of the complete interview between Berry and anchor Dan Rather, portions of which aired on "60 Minutes II" on Sept. 28. It also was posted on the company's Web site, www.cbs.com.
Prosecutors had subpoenaed CBS producer Mary Mapes and ordered her to bring the video and transcript of the outtakes. Golden twice found Ms. Mapes in contempt of court and ordered her jailed for failing to hand over both items. Two Texas appeals courts upheld the lower court's ruling, and Ms. Mapes avoided jail when the network agreed to provide the transcript and a witness to verify its authenticity...
