Poll question: How many people here knew Dred Scott was Bush-lingo for Roe v. Wade?
Friday night, I just thought he was an idiot. Since then it was pointed out to me that his use of this was to assure the anti-choice community that he would make abortions illegal. Apparently, the administration has been using Dred Scott as their code word for Roe for some time. The litmus test is not slavery (which was outlawed) It is the making of all abortions illegal. They cannot openly say they will overturn Roe. Hence, their code word is Dred Scott.

Kerry should find a way to bring Bush's comment in the last debate and point out the lingo and put Bush on the spot with a challenge to him to agree to appoint pro-choice justices.

1. Read it somewhere
But still, I doubt if it made sense to anyone outside that group of people who are already completely hypnotized by Bush.

4. Kerry should let the rest of the people in on it at tonight's debate.

2. What was the "Senator Kennedy" reference code for?
Interesting that Chimpy went out of his way to insult the black community, just to pander to the nutcase right.

11. It's not surprising that he'd insult blacks
He doesn't give a rat's ass about minorities and he knows he won't get their votes. Unless they're super-fundamentalists, then they'll vote for him because Kerry is a "baby killer." Bush could call people like that the N word and they'd still vote for him, so he has nothing to lose.

OMG I F-ING DETEST HIM SO MUCH!!!!!

Sorry... just had to get that off my chest.

5. It's a Really Odd Argument
because Bush is supporting a strict constructionist approach by citing a disastrous court ruling based on strict constructionism. Go figure.

14. I didn't know until it was brought up here
and I'm fairly up on these things - I donate regularly to Planed Parenthood and get and read their newsletters, I keep up with reproductive rights news online, etc., and I had no idea.

15. The real question is - what are they waiting for on Roe v Wade?
Why all the wink-wink nudge-nudge secret codes?

The Republicans have controlled all sections of government for years. Both houses of Congress, the White House, the Supreme Court. They tried to pass a constitutional amendment against same-sex marriages.

Why not go after Roe v Wade?

My opinion? The Republicans will never, ever overturn Roe v Wade. It would take away their winningest wedge issue.

Ask a freeper why the Republicans haven't done something about Roe v Wade and watch their heads explode.

16. Dred Scott as a marker for Roe only works with a very norrow slice of
the fundy anti-abortion crowd. With everyone else it was just weird so it didn't help Bush at all and may have hurt him with the intellectual crowd but most of them aren't voting for him anyway.
