Edwards Stem Cell / Reeves Comment... |
|
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 01:47 PM by PLA0242
Is there anyone else here that feels the comments made by Edwards yesterday concerning Christoper Reeves death and stem cell research was ill advised?
-P
On Edit... I'm seriously not trolling here...I simply heard Imus talking about it and I saw the clip.
Edwards said something to the effect that "Under a Kerry Administration, people like Christopher Reeves would be walking..."
(Not an exact quote, of course).

4. They're taken out of context--he said something good about America. |
|

I just watched the clip. He is not saying if Kerry is elected paralyzed people will walk--which is what the GOP is saying.
He said that when America is working toward something, like they will be working when John Kerry is president, people like Chris Reeve will get out of their wheelchairs, that's the America he knows and loves...or something like that, LOL.
It was more a statement about hardworking Americans.
And he's right.

6. I know that Reeve, himself, said |
|
that he was sure his health would have been greatly improved had Bush allowed unfettered stem-cell research to continue. These were Reeve's own words (paraphrased, of course; I don't have Barbara Walter's transcripts)...

8. I don't know the exact context of the words |
|
so what I did hear made me raise an eyebrow and kind of chuckle. I do think it is a stretch to say (paraphrasing) "elect Kerry and paralyzed people will walk". However, to me that was NOTHING compared to Cheney's, "elect Kerry and we will get hit by terrorists and it will be big" (paraphrasing again).

He was talking about America and how Americans would help paralyzed people like Chris get out of their wheelchairs.
But--he added a dependent clause that was "like they'll do when John Kerry is President". And THAT'S what they're running with.

11. like I said, what I heard was completely out of context |
|
and was made to SOUND like he was saying Kerry would make people walk again. I found it humorous the way MSNBC was playing it up.

10. He probably could have said it a little better |
|
But only because in this campaign you always have to worry about how your words will be twisted and distorted by the shameless Rove machine.
I thibk most people understand what Edwards was saying. He was saying that under President Kerry, stem-cell research will go forward and people like Reeve will be much more likely to be able to walk one day. No disputing that.

12. Here's the exact quote, just aired on CNN: |
|
"If we do the work we can do in this country, like we will do when John Kerry's the president, people like Chris Reeves will get out of their wheelchairs."
I think there was a bit more after that, such as "that's the America I..." something, but that's what they just showed.

14. It should be compared |
|
to John F Kennedy's man will walk on the moon quote, i.e. something which seems virtually impossible at the outset but with time and perserverance (and funds) will prob happen.

13. There's a good chance they would! Reconsider! |
|
Scientists are not prone to predicting much. They did about stem cell research from embryos. They said in about four years there would be stunning advances in Parkinson's and spinal cord injury treatment. Now is NOT the time to apologize for anything our candidates say.

15. Edwards was saying ONE DAY people like Chris Reeve will walk |
|
because Kerry/Edwards won't hamper the work of scientists on the stem cell research.
It was a quote about THE FUTURE.
He didn't make any promises about the CURRENT situation.

17. Good for Edwards. He's right. There are ads in CA talking |
|
about stem cell research making that kind of a difference.
