Who will the Rethugs run in 2008?
I'm being positive and assuming Kerry will win in November, so who will he run against in '08? My guesses are Jeb or Giuliani, though they may run W again. Who else might there be?

5. Giuliani
is pro-gay, pro-choice and anti-gun.

He'd never get through the primaries, even after Sept. 11.

35. A pro-choice candidate getting the nomination?
Don't think so. His candidacy will end as soon as the train leaves from New Hampshire southbound.

2. Pataki, Santorum, Hayworth, Romney, Weld et al.
They have guys they can run. I doubt McCain, Giuliani or Jeb Bush would run.

If Weld is appointed Senator by Romney and then he runs against Kerry in '08 that would be funny.

Not Jeb
Once * loses, the Rethugs will never want to see another of that idiot family again. Giuliani would be a nightmare to oppose, but a welcome sign that the Fundie Freak Fringe was losing its grip on the party.

39. I wish they were that smart, but I doubt it
Did any of us really expect there to be a Jr. after we dumped Bush I? Never in my nightmares did I see that one coming, so I'm not closing the door on Jebbie - or Jebbie Jr. - making a run in 2008/12/16/20. God help us. :eyes:

13. Arnold will never be president.
Our Constitution bars him from running for president. And yes, it is HIGHLY unlikely that it will ever be changed.

19. they are discussing changing it...
some compromises have been laid out I believe which allow someone who has been a citizen for say 35 years they could run. Nothing to vote on yet though is my understanding

22. Rudy Giuliani/Elizabeth Dole
That would seem to be the only ticket that could get at least 40% of the vote. Moderate enough on the surface at least. Who else is there? Jeb, people will not want another Bush after JK fixes the Country. Bill Frist, why would anyone want an HMO as President? Tom Delay, because the Repugs want to loose BADLY?

McCain is going to be right in the pack but the repukes wont be backing him (until and if he takes the nomination that is). I have heard over and over again how the repuke power brokers can't stand him.

I fully expect to see a guy like Frist, Romney, Pataki, Santorum or some other jackass to be the sacrificial lamb. I doubt guys like McCain or Guliani risk their reputation running against a steam engine like an incumbent John Kerry. JMO

29. However, if this is a close election
they might think a big name would push them over the top. Unless, of course, Kerry fixes everything and becomes the Big Dawg of the 00s. Then there's no hope for 'em. YIPPEE!

31. John McCain, without a doubt; that is if his health keeps us
which may be doubtful. I personally don't like the man and think he's phony as they come, but the Repugs will probably think he's the only guy who could beat Hillary, and I really don't think she'll be running ever.

34. Giuliani, McCain, Arnold, Romney.
This election will shatter the Axis of Piety (GOP, Religious Reich, Culture Wars) and put an end to the Red Meat Coalition.

The next POTUS candidate from the GOP will have to be a social moderate and Giuliani, Arnold and McCain all fit that bill.

Giuliani would seem to be the most likely candidate: high visibility heroic leadership, socially moderate, very popular. I do believe he has many skeletons in his closet, and a few on public display too. This may matter less than expected because of the above mentioned demise of the Axis of Piety.

If McCain runs, he would be a formidable opponent, even if Kerry does very well in his first term. He is extremely popular on both sides. He is socially moderate and environmentally conscious.

Arnold would need a change in the laws to allow a non-native born person to run, but that could happen. I could even see it happening due to the desire to run Arnold. Once again socially moderate, rational about gun control, but still a rabid Republican as a pro-corporate, anti-tax fanatic.

Mitt Romney is a bit of a wild card. He could play the moderate candidate and still wield the culture warrior card on the sly. He's the one I would least like to see run in 2008. The other candidates would turn off the religious right but Romney might be able to capture them without appearing to be an extremest.

tho' I don't think that McCain is particularly socially moderate. He's pro-life and voted for cloture on the Federal Marriage Amendment.

40. Jebby
Logic has it that if Poppy is a one term president and Chimpy gets voted out after one term that the faith based GOP wouldn't even try Jebby. But hell, when we are talking faith based repubs logic flys out the window.

I'd say Jebby and if not him Santorum. These two are most easily maipulated by the PNAC and Rove.

41. You would think they might actually run an intellectual for once
if Kerry and Edwards account for four debate wins and that is what turns the tide in this election. Unfortunately for the RePukelicans, there are no intellectuals or individual with any degree of intellectual curiosity and speaking ability in the Republican Party.
