The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) recently met with President Bush and reminded the Republican president of the wounds inflicted by the Florida presidential election deadlock and discussed more than 20 other issues including racial profiling, election reform, AIDS, Africa, education and civil rights.

The meeting of 31 members of the CBC was "cordial" said Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer, and lasted 90 minutes--twice as long as scheduled.

Bush pledged a high level of sensitivity on civil fights, and promised to make Africa a high priority, Fleischer and participants said.

Bush opened the meeting by telling his visitors: "I will remind you all that I understand the difference between the executive branch and the legislative branch. I only get to suggest, and you all pass the laws."

The Republican president told the CBC that he saw the gathering as "the beginning of hopefully a lot of meetings."

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

The President welcomed the opportunity to visit with members of the Congressional Black Caucus today at the White House. They had a positive discussion about their shared concern for the Haitian people. The President continues to deplore the violence in Haiti, and is greatly concerned about the loss of life.

The President indicated he would consider their ideas as we work toward a peaceful political solution to the current situation. The United States is actively working with the international community to help the Haitian people find such a political solution. Humanitarian assistance for the Haitian people is a priority, and we continue to work through our relief organizations to make sure that aid is getting to those who need it.
