"Faith without works is dead." -- YES!!!!!!!
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 10:41 PM by crispini
How wonderful was it to hear Kerry say this. Made me tear up.

"Everything you do in public work has to be guided by your faith, affected by your faith, but without transferring it to others. That's why I fight against poverty. That's why I fight to clean up the environment and protect this earth.

That's why I fight for equality and justice. All of those things come out of that fundamental teaching and belief of faith.

But I know this, that President Kennedy in his inaugural address told all of us that,
here on earth, God's work must truly be our own. "

That WAS SO BEAUTIFUL!

I really think he totally touched some hearts there. And I bet that it made some of Shrub's "base" think twice. At least I hope so, if they're any kind of Christians.

edited to get the whole quote.

2. Mother Teresa vs Jimmy Swaggart
I thought it was the best part of the debate when Kerry called Bush on Christian values.

7. But it sure will with Catholics
Catholics don't buy this crap about living an unethical life and sneaking into heaven by faith alone. Separates them from the Rapture crowd, which was a good thing for Kerry to do. The Left Behind gang won't vote for Kerry no matter what.

5. That rocked. Kerry took the whole faith thing and ran with it...
He chose an excellent Bible verse to quote too--pointing out that Shrub
is all talk and no walk when it comes to Christianity.

6. A thought that came into my head
I thought that line might have a subtle effect regarding Catholics and Protestants. Catholicism, of course, is founded upon the belief that in order to get into Heaven, one must have faith and do good works (in addition to accepting the Holy Trinity and being baptized). Protestantism believes that faith alone is enough justification (in addition to accepting the Holy Trinity). Of course, that Protestant belief does not stem from selfishness or callousness, but from the belief that nothing we do can ever redeem ourselves in the eyes of God, and it is through His mercy that we are granted access to paradise. Duh, you should do good works to back up your faith, but doing it in order to please God is no good because there's nothing humans can ever do that will impress the Alpha and the Omega.

I know what Kerry meant to say, which is that talking about religion is nothing if you don't follow, or even go contrary to those tenets. But it almost sounded like a religious argument to me.
